Dear Mom, Dad, Mommio, family and friends,
We are just fine! Yes there was an incident here in Mazatlan on Sunday afternoon where a fellow from Penticton, just a two hour drive from our home in Canada, got hit in the leg via stray bullets but we were not involved and I repeat, we are fine. I’m sure you saw it all on the TV news Tuesday evening. Interesting that this happened on Sunday but only hit the news Tuesday. Here is a translation of the story from the Mazatlan Noroeste by a reporter on the online Mazatlan Messenger. It is sad that this happened to a fellow Canadian and we wish him and his family well.

Before you start with the emails and the phone calls please remember that just a month ago Vancouver had its own outbreak of gang violence with 10 people shot on Oak Street. Interesting enough we were in Mazatlan on Monday within a mile of where this shooting occurred and heard nothing of it. In fact we will be right back in the area today, Wednesday. We can’t live our life in fear and can honestly say that we have never felt safer in Mexico. We go about our business in a normal manner whether here or at home. No one has control over being hit by a car or a stray bullet. So please don’t panic, don’t ask us to come home and don’t worry. Instead be happy for us that we are able to get away and enjoy life.

After my blog yesterday on fish and fishing we received an email from some American friends. We met this couple a few years ago online via Rv.net. We have the same RV, we both have had them repainted, we have the same tow car (although Chuck uses a Jeep) and each have 2 dogs, one of whom has the same name. We finally met them in person last winter both here at Tres Amigos and in Teacapan. Strangely enough we even ended up driving side by side down I8 one morning in Yuma at the end of last season! This winter Chuck & Sandy are staying at an RV Park in the Lo de Marcos area. Here is Chuck’s story…
Well we have been out fishing again and once more a BIG one for us, especially when we are fishing out of a rubber boat (Zodiac)
The fishing has not been too good, we have been out and not caught anything, but just when we were running out of Snapper to eat, we caught this Dorado……………..Good on the grill!
It is tough living the retirement life, BUT someone has to!
 Chuck and a friend!
Great looking Dorado! Chuck, aren’t you glad you decided to come back to Mexico this winter? |

…aka Mahi mahi in Hawaii! Colin and I use to go to Maui ( before wieners) annually for at least 3 weeks and our favorite meal was Mahi-mahi….little did we know that this is the same fish here in Mexico called Dorado!!!!!!!!! When we head back to Canada our freezer is full of Dorado!
Can you find Colin among the pelicanos? There is a major fresh fish market just at the embarcadero from Mazatlan to the Isla. The other day Colin had a hunger pang for Dorado…so off he went to his favorite vendor…
This was the very Dorado that our 1/2 kilo came from…a little over one pound for 45 pesos…3.80CAD…..you can’t get it any fresher or cheaper!!!!
About six people form RV 1 and RV2 went deep sea fishing last Friday but to no avail…despite not catching anything they did have a great time. At least we have a back up for fish!

Here on the Isla there is no fuel, no Pemex, which is the Mexican state-owned petro company. Most Rvers have 4 X 4’S and use the beach to bypass the 13 km horrid pot holed gravel road before reaching a paved road enroute to civilization. Fuel at the end of the beach is not too far at all. Don’t get me wrong, we actually love this isolation, it keeps the bad guys away!! However those of us unable to drive the beach are stuck here on the isla or are forced to drive the dreaded road to refuel. Colin and I have somehow managed to empty our fuel tank by going exactly nowhere! Mucho driving to well… nowhere!!! Suddenly we realized we had an empty fuel tank. We just might have enough fuel to get to a Pemex but again we might not!!! As we are driving down the road here on the Isla we spot Danny!! We come to a screeching stop! What do we do? No worries, tomorrow I will come to your casa. Bueno!

An empty container is sent over to Mazatlan via panga where someone walks it over the the Pemex, about a block away. The filled container is then returned to the Isla and left near the dock where it will eventually be picked up by Danny or whoever ordered the fuel. Such simplicity versus the fueling of the massive cruise ship in port.

High tech siphoning gets the job done!

It's just that easy! Fuel 200 pesos, transportation & delivery 20 pesos. Beyond amazing!

Remember I told you that we might have another link critter lurking about RV1….we do, well we did! One set of neighbors kept gently hinting to their friends that there was a bit of an odor coming from their vehicle….so it was finally investigated and discovered that indeed there was a deceased critter inside.

Brave Chava, one of our veggie vendors, volunteered to do the dirty work.

Simon is happy...now all he has to do is repair the damage in his truck!
In fact this happened a few days ago (would you believe the day of the concert) and the fellows in the park got the necessary parts and were able to do the repairs. Not wanting to be selfish we have sent an email out to all the critters here in RV1 to please move on to RV2 as they are feeling left out. No more critters aqui! Mucho gracias!!
So then this morning Carmeh suddenly jumps up on the chair all the while sniffing…she seriously believes that something has been inside the RV. She is our sniffer dog and thus far has never been wrong. Sigh!!

She was so intense that Colin's hat got crushed beneath her feet!
