Canadian West Coast Seafood Evening

Held on Superbowl Sunday, Feb. 6!  Guess who had top billing???

Salmon....imported from BC Canada

and even more salmon, shrimp, halibut and shark!

We were treated to a spectacular dinner of West Coast Canadian fish…thanks to Bob & Bonnie, Ken & Pat, Joseph & Susan, Brent & Donna, Mike & Kitty, Roger & Susie, all West Coast residents when not here on the Isla!

Bob explains where the salmon is from...

...almost too much to eat! Gourmet!

I understand that the wine and there was plenty of it, was compliments of Harrison Cove Lodge, the fishing lodge where the salmon was caught.   Mucho gracias for the wine from all of us.  Be sure to check out this great fishing venue in Canada or at least click on the link to see the some of  Canada’s West Coast beauty.  We are proud of what we have!!

As we ate the Super Bowl commenced. My Dad will be the first to tell you, I have no idea whatsoever re sports, even though he tried.  He really did try but I just wasn’t into it.  However earlier today I heard on TV that the Green Bay Packers were owned by the fans.  People just bought a share, or several shares but this was no multi million dollar endeavor.  Okay I thought, this is good and so they will be my team!!

Some serious game watchers!

I am so happy to say that “my team” won and yes I watched to the very end!!  After a week of cold weather this really was a marvelous evening for our RV Park.  I almost forgot to mention that the wind calmed down and it was an almost perfect outdoor event.

Adios Susan & Joseph, they left at 6 AM today for San Carlos and onto the US. They have a few obligations with family in the next few weeks before they head back to Vancouver Island!

Slowly getting back to normal!

The nights are still cool but not cold and the days are warmer by a few degrees every day!  The ocean is very cold and so is the breeze that comes off it.  In order to sit in the sun one has to find a sheltered spot, then bask in the warm heat. It feels so good.  When it was too cold to go out I would sit in a sunny window in the RV.   Today the girls dug up a small crab.  There have been no crab holes for a long while, not like November when the girls could hunt and dig up crabs till they dropped or got bored with the game.

My cold is almost gone.  I don’t understand people who have colds or are ill and go out, whether to shop or to a variety of appointments.  First of all I worry about infecting others and secondly I just don’t have the energy or even the desire to do anything.  Even reading can be tedious. The hardest thing I had to cancel last week was my massage, how I miss my weekly 90 minute session.  Today we have been invited to a Super Bowl Party  so I get to have my first outing in a week!!!  Yeah!

We received some sad news the other day.  Our very good friends’ doxie passed away on the 4th.  Hilde was only ten but got into something she shouldn’t have and eventually her body gave up the fight.  Our dogs (even Cloii & Channel who are no longer with us)  have played with Hilde for over 8 years and shared beaches with her in Mexico, the USA and at home in Kelowna.  We will all miss Hilde.  This photo was taken after a long walk at Pismo Beach, California on Dec.2, 2004.

Hilde, Cloii and Carmeh. Hilde & Cloii are together on some great beach in doggie heaven hunting crabs. We miss you girls!

Muy frio!!

It was a cold one last night!  Statistically it went down to 1C with the windchill at 6:00AM and by 8:00AM it was up to 3C (43F) but never got above 17C (62F).  Tonight is expected to be another very cold night here in Mazatlan. It wasn’t until I read the Mazatlan newspaper online that I realized how bad the wind was yesterday.  Here is a photo from the Noroeste…

According to the article the beaches were closed to the public in Mazatlan as well as here on Stone Island....we never got the memo! In addition the harbor was closed to smaller vessels due to 6-7 foot swells.

There has been some talk of damage to corn crops but that will be assessed once this cold front passes.  Tonight again it is expected to go down to 4C before the windchill.  With the windchill Mazatlan did hit record lows.  Here are a few photos from the Mazatlan Noroeste.

These people have no way to get out of the wind and cold.

We have an American friend living here on the Isla in the process of building a home.  At the moment there is no glass in the windows nor wood at the door, she was cold last night…here is what she wrote about last night…”I am sitting here under the covers, with two more blankets than usual, wool socks, a thermal shirt, sweater and a blankie over my shoulders …a heater…right next to me and I am still chilled….Wondering when this situation will be reversed and all will be back to normal….“!

Meet Markus, the night security guard here at Tres Amigos!

Markus is here to watch over us Rvers as we sleep – even in this muy frio temperature.  Colin spoke with Markus last night, he has on 4 layers, a shirt, 2 sweaters and a parka.  On his head is a wool toque covered with a baseball cap.  Gloves of course and wool socks, we just don’t know the number of pant layers.

When Markus is not walking about RV 1 or 2 with his guard dog, he lays in this hammock under an open air palapa! He never gets to go in from the cold at all during his shift from approx. 9 PM to 7AM!!

So last night we set  up a hot coffee bar for him, plugged into power at our site so he could have a hot coffee all night.  Next year I will bring him down some of those hot packs you can put into your socks and gloves to keep him a tad warmer.  He is only one of many suffering through this cold snap.  Our friend ( the one building the house) has a warmer place to sleep tonight.  Hopefully a few others will also!!

If you are coming south to Mexico soon or even next season don’t forget to pack some woolies or a jacket or even a blanket!  The locals will be most appreciative!  Let’s hope tonight is the last frigid night here!!

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside”

As they gather around the veggie truck, everyone is wearing their winter woolies, except Steve that is.  He just got here 2 days ago so his blood is still full of Canadian cold!!  Just wait till he acclimatizes like the rest of us and starts to shiver.  We don’t know if this is a new low for Mazatlan but we feel like it is! It was a cool 44F this morning and only heated up to 65F. Actually it may have been cooler because……….

..the wind is really really blowing!

This tent and a few others were blown down.  No damaged awnings that we are aware of.  The wind has added a windchill factor to the weather.  Locals are walking around with blankets around them.  They are intensely feeling this winter storm.  We know that you are all very cold further North but these poor people have no heat in their homes, nor furnaces.  In fact most of them have no windows or doors!

There was one lone vendor on the beach this morning. I don't who he was going to find to sell anything to.

The wind is kicking up the sand making for an uncomfortable beach walk and dry dirt that covers the roads is flying everywhere, at times to the point of not seeing more that a few feet.  Definitely a day to stay inside and add brandy to your coffee or perhaps start happy hour a tad earlier.

Tonight the forecast calls for a low of 37F and winds from 25 – 33MPH!!!

Caeli has claimed her hot spot!

...and Carmeh has snuggled in.

All that’s left is to go pour something to keep the adults warm……

Was it a dream?

I woke up late Wednesday afternoon from my cold induced nap and looked out the window!  Que Pasa!!

I watched as a mare and her foal were led into the surf...

Their owner must have deemed it bath time, the baby was unsure.

..but the foal stayed close to Mom...

They frolicked in the surf as I watched.  At times I wondered if the baby would tumble and flip through the waves but even as the surf covered it,  it always seemed to remain head up.  What a treat to watch.  When they come out of the ocean the owner dressed, mounted the mare and galloped away with the baby neighing behind. I never know what I will see from my garden!!

...so ends groundhog day....yeah an early spring!!!
