PINK MARTINI

No not the drink, but the group.  That is who we went to see on Saturday night.

In addition to all the special events Mission Hill Winery sponsors over the year they always do 4 summer concerts.

Colin was hired to take photos of the Gipsy Kings concert and of the LeAnn Rimes performance.  The first event this year was Chris Botti who had also performed last season so no photos were necessary.  Saturday night we were invited guests.

It was the perfect evening to sit back and enjoy. We are sitting at the top of the concert bowl by choice. I did not want to chance my hip in any way possible by walking down any further. The grass looked steep in places. The winery certainly lends itself to an event like this.

The group was excellent and so was the sound. I have to say it was a perfect evening sitting back and sipping an ice cold Sauvignon Blanc. I saw the odd boat and sailboat out on Lake Okanagan. After the first three songs Colin put his camera down and just sat beside me and enjoyed. It was a real treat for both of us.

The end!

Totally worn out!

We did go to a fabulous concert last night and that along with todays activities have left me with no stamina.  I hope to post about the concert tomorrow.

I am only 6 weeks post op and seem to have little or no energy and today some pain.  I am no longer on any meds and am just pushing thru.  I do have to say that Colin treated me to a Dairy Queen soft ice cream cone last night.  I felt like we were out on a big date night.

Thanks for all of your comments re my bad hair day.  I am becoming more and more upset.  Hey I am a blonde not a dark ash grey girl. I never did show you my face with the dark hair, really it is just not me.  I put my hair up this morning and all I see is very very dark hair.  Hmm, do you think we might have to head south sooner?  I am willing but not my guy….too much work to do first.

Today we just had to do errands, in and out of this store and that one.  By the last one I was limping badly.  Have to say I was extremely disappointed to see both a 5th wheel and a long trailer sitting in the the Walmart parking without any tow vehicle nearby.  They had been dropped and set up on their jacks.  Not nice to see, most especially as we only have the one Walmart here in Kelowna and there is barely enough parking space for us shoppers.  I don’t mind RVers overnighting  in a Walmart ( we even do it in the US ) but not at 3PM and to just leave your rig unattended…..no way!  I can see an RV restriction coming soon to our  town 🙁

We are in the midst of a severe thunder storm warning and the girls are hiding out.  No rain, just lots of noise.  Sure hope there were not too many lightening strikes.

One of the things we were shopping for today was a wasp catcher.  Those critters are creating all kinds of problems. Rod went shopping the other day and made some progress getting rid of them.

This is Rod's photo and what he has been using. In fact 2 of our neighbors have the same wasp catcher.

So Colin and I went to three stores today and they are all sold out of any type of wasp catcher.  Too bad we never invented something like this.

Have a great Saturday night and I will catch up with you tomorrow.

Bad hair day!

Well for me it was traumatic.  Even Colin was upset as he thought I no longer looked like his wife.

Yesterday hair turned grey!

I have yet to find a great hairdresser in this area.  I have been looking for ten years.  The first few years I even kept going back to Vancouver to get my hair done.  About 5 years ago I found someone in Vernon, about 40 minutes away, but she quit last summer to go back to school to become an accountant.  I have been though a few locals since then.

I love my Mazatlan hairdresser. This is how I always look with her. I look like me.

This is my hair colour. I was a white blonde child.

I used a new lady earlier this June and it was okay, not great.  Shortly afterwards I thought the blonde was looking reddish.  Even one of the home care nurses made a comment about me being a redhead.  So yesterday I mentioned that to my new lady and she ‘fixed’ the formula she said.

My hair is more grey than blonde.

Colin thinks I look like an old lady now.

So I called my hairdresser Debbie ,in Mazatlan and she gave me some advice, most importantly to just leave it for now.  Next week I will go back to my local lady who will try a clarifying shampoo which might lighten things up a bit.  But the hair underneath is almost black.  My arrival in Mazatlan can’t come soon enough.

But then I have looked worse.

Class of '71. Thanks for sending me this Denise.

Colin had no idea which one I was.  It is blurry but I am 3rd from the left in the middle row.

LESSON LEARNED

It’s not like I am totally stupid.  But I was having a big craving, a craving for chocolate.  I remembered that way back in the cupboard I had some Weight Watcher chocolate covered mints.  What I didn’t think about was that they were dark chocolate or that I should not devour the entire package.  It was a really huge craving.

So this morning I woke up with red itchy spots and what was starting to look like hives.  Any chocolate, but especially dark chocolate equals caffeine!  So the light turned on in my mind this morning.  I did it to myself.  Lesson learned.  If anything this establishes that my allergy or intolerance is to caffeine.

So between this and the wasp sting in the ear I am one hot itchy lady.

I called and found out that the allergy tests I am doing next week do not check for caffeine or cocoa allergies.  That particular test costs $699.00!!  Meanwhile I called Lifelabs here in B.C. that did my earlier allergy testing.  They may still have my blood and can do a test for cocoa for $21.00 but they do not have a caffeine test.  I will find out tomorrow.

Meanwhile a miracle happened.  The glass for the stair railings arrived.

Poor fellow, it was so hot and he thought he should be getting some help. Well not from me and that was for certain.

It all looks very very good. As an added bonus we are already awaiting a replacement for the bottom front step area. The installer decided it was not up to standard as it had a few marks on it.

Fine by me as long as I get to keep this one in the meantime.  Have you noticed a pattern here?  Our days are never quiet.

From the back end of a truck

But what was in the truck?

Tuesday was a long day full of errands which meant Colin had to take about 4 hours off to drive me around.  The most important was my 5 1/2 week check up with my surgeon.  Rather than a simple  office visit, this involves a trip to the hospital.  First you have to take a number to check in at admitting and then up to another floor where you wait in line to hand in your paperwork.  Then a long 40 minute wait even though I had an appointment.  Finally my name is called and five minutes later I am leaving.  What was the point?  He looked at the x-ray and at the scar and said I was good.  No he did not check my range of motion, nor have me walk, actually nothing.  I asked if my legs were even in length.  The reply was that if they felt level they were, if not then they were not.  Comforting indeed.  At the last minute he said he should see me again end of October before we head south.  I have a physio appointment at the hospital next week on the 19th where I will hopefully get checked out.

The good news is that I checked in at Weight Watchers for the first time in 2 months and I have remained exactly where I was weight wise.  I think that is pretty good considering I have been doing more sitting and laying down than walking.  Of course that is changing day by day.  We also picked up a Papa Murphy pizza to take home and bake.  That is 2 pizzas in two weeks and no gluten reaction thus far.  I am totally off coffee, even decaf for now.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

We got home shortly after 4PM to find that the fish truck was arriving within the hour.

There is a fellow here in the park that has a native Indian friend from the coast that is a fisherman and once very August he drives his catch here to sell off the back of his truck.

These sockeye salmon were still swimming in the Fraser River  just 14 hours before I took this shot.  They are all about 8 – 10 LBS  and sold for $15.00 each.  Very very fresh.

Jerry also had 2 huge spring salmon, a red and white. We bought the white for only $40.00.

Turns out that this was a rare marble spring salmon. For a few extra dollars we asked Jerry to fillet the sockeye and to make streaks out of the spring. He did not have the proper tools but did a much better job than we ever could have.

Fortunately we found a friend who was willing to lend us some freezer space.  It only took us an hour to double bag and label everything.  I even packaged a few odd pieces for fish chowder.  What was going to Mexico in October went to our friends’ freezer and the rest into our house freezer.  After our pizza dinner Colin went out and purchased another 2 sockeye.  Good thing we love salmon. For $120.00 we now have 18 dinners of which about six are packaged for four people.  If you want to get detailed that is 48 individual fresh wild salmon meals @ $2.50 each.   Guess what we are having for dinner tonight?

Thanks for all the suggestions of what to put on a wasp sting.  It still is sore and itchy.  I love what Rod said “there are more wasps than tourists around here” !  Too true.
