Back in time to Napa Valley

A week ago today, Thursday November 3rd, was day two of our Napa Valley winery tour.

The grand entrance.

This is the Darioush Winery, on the Silverado Trail. Simply stunning.

This is the Darioush Winery, on the Silverado Trail. Simply stunning.  That is me in the pink.  This has been described as one of the most ostentatious edifices in Napa, it is a reconstruction of Persepolis.  The winery is owned by a wealthy Iranian.

A lot of Persian influence here. The labels are etched into the glass.

Once agian I askerd if could pay to siomply sample the Savignon Blanc

Once again I asked if could pay to simply sample the Sauvignon Blanc and was gifted with a taste.  Oh my, impossible to describe the best ever wine I have ever tasted.  I suggested to Colin that we might want to buy one bottle.  The fellow then offered us a taste of the Chardonnay.  He said that the SB was young, 2015, and would need about 3 months to settle but the Chardonnay ( 2014 ) was ready.  Again so many notes to distinguish and enjoy.  These wines sell out within a short time of being bottled and are only sold at the winery.

So we tasted and discussed a variety of wines with the young fellow who it turned out was from Guadalajara, Mexico.  We finally decided to buy one bottle and then Colin said lets buy a second bottle.  So we bought one of each.  I got 5 cents back from a $100.00 bill.  Our plan was to savor the Chardonnay as we celebrated the US election.  That bottle is still unopened waiting for another celebratory event.  It wasn’t until we went to pay for the wine that we realized that Colin had forgotten his wallet at the RV 😯

So here we were with less than $35.00 and neither of us had our Drivers License with us  Nothing to do bur carry on.

Up the road was the Stag's Leap Wine Cellar not to be confused with the Stags' Leap Winery. The placement of the apostrophe is a small variation as is their labels.

Amazing how two Napa wineries won that year.  It certainly made a difference to the history of this valley.

Next stop was the lovely Silverado Winery up a small hill.

Lovely views from their patio. Once agian I was gifted with a taste.

Lovely views from their patio. Once again I was gifted with a taste of SB.  I was beginning to feel bad as I didn’t even have enough money to buy anything.  But oh so much fun.

Not a fancy place at all and mostly underground. They only make the one wine, a red, called Quintessa. A single 750ml bottle of the 2013 is $175.00. The wine can only be purchased at the winery and they will ship but the specifics for shipping are several paragraphs long all pertaining to dates and the risk for heat shock and damage. One is advised to wait until the weather is shipping appropriate.

What a fun morning that was and we have just three more to review in Part 2.  To be continued………

Checking things off the list

Part of our time here in Palm Springs is to buy some last minute supplies for Mexico, do a few RV required chores and simply rearrange the inside ( my job ) and the basement of the RV and the car ( Colin’s job ).  It was too wet and cool for us to do a proper job before we left home but we knew that we had this extra time to get organized.

we pretty much loaded the car with a large Walmart shop including new lights for our Ilsla patio.

We pretty much loaded the car with a large Walmart shop including new lights for our Isla patio.  Then we stopped at Lowe’s.  I wanted some good soil to grow my kale and swiss chard in as last year was a dud.  We also bought some paint to brighten up a certain area of our site.  Stay tuned on those details once we get to Mexico.

Good thing we left the girls at home.

We traveled east via the Tehachapi pass and stopped somewhere in Lancaster to pee the three girls 😀

Welcome to Palm Springs.

Welcome to Palm Springs.

Not such a great welcome as the rest area was closed for repairs, although nothing appeared to be happening.  Most frustrating, as all the girls need to go.  We finally pulled into one of the very very very few truck stops ( like two ) we had encountered since leaving Bakersfield.  We have always had this problem in the LA area, no place to be able to pull in with a 60 foot length to fuel up unless it is a proper truck stop.  Finally found a Pilot that gave us an additional 3 cents off as we are Good Sam members.  We paid 2.869 per gallon and we were near empty and took almost 72 gallons.

While Colin fueled the RV, I fed the girls.  Then he took them next door to a Wendy’s to pee while I moved the RV ahead so that another truck could come behind and start to fuel up.  Sadly there was no place for us to pull over so that Colin and I could eat.  Sigh, I was hungry.  I grabbed a piece of my 10 year old cheddar and we carried on.  The good news is that this exit allowed us to simply cross over I10 and head into Desert Hot Springs.  We are spending the next week at the Passport America Catalina Spa RV Resort.  It was 89F when we checked in 😆

I had been quoted 22.50 per night but it turned out that that was in the lower area.

We had a great walk.  The girls seem happy here. It will be very hot over the week we are here, but we don’t have to run the A/C the entire time due to our strategic positioning.  It was a bittersweet walk as we stopped and chatted with another camper.  I noticed that they were from Alberta.  It turns out that they were from Rosedale, Alberta and knew both my father, Albert, and my uncle, Andy.  Such a small world.  I walked away in tears as it brought my past back with my father in the many vacations we had in Rosedale.  Dad’s family was well known in the area.

One never knows where the road will lead you, nor whom you will meet not to mention what wonderful friends you will make along that road.  Life is to be enjoyed each and every day and to the fullest.  Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

OUr day

Our day took us 225 miles.  Nice to be in one spot for the next week.

You don’t need to remind me……those final Napa posts are next 😀

Worst Day on the Road

We left our wonderful Napa RV site at 8:15, ready to enjoy the drive with a container of fruit and a coffee each. The girls had been fed and had done their business. We were looking forward to a good 2 hours or more before taking a break.

Despite maps, printed out Google directions and some actual map screen captures on the laptop which was on my lap we missed our crucial turn! No ones fault, it just happened. Instead of turning left onto 12 which I thought we were already on ( which we were but then suddenly a stop and left turn was required and we were in the wrong lane) and with Colin saying that we did not want to go to Sacramento we missed the turn. We went straight through on 29 and Colin turned right into what we thought was an industrial area. It actually was a T intersection with nowhere for us to turn around and all dead ends.

We weren’t sure we would make it but have every other time so Colin went for it. Sadly it was not possible and we were at an odd angle with the car jackknifed behind us.

It was not possible to unhook the car due to facing downhill and the position of the car and the strain on the tow hitch.

So Colin went back to the car and turned the wheel and tires and hence the direction of the car as I ever so slowly backed the RV. It was a slow motion ballet. After a few of those smooth moves I then had to torque the RV wheel to the left as hard as I could which we not easy and then turn and turn some more. Finally I inched forward under Colin’s direction so that the RV could turn and miss hitting the sign. It was close but we did do it. Phew!

We were back on track within 10 minutes and enjoying the wonder scenery despite the electrical wires.

We were back on track within 10 minutes and enjoying the wonderful scenery despite the electrical wires.

Then the second nightmare of the day began ( it was way worse than a problem ). As navigator I was prepared for 12 to merge with I80 and knew that we had an extremely quick on and then an immediate off. However the ramp exits were under construction and the signs were confusing. We took the exit for I680South and did exit. But it was not until we were into the exit that I saw the sign behind the sign. There were in fact two right turn exits one behind the other. Ours was the second one but the sign we needed was directly behind the first sign and we could not see it until we were on the first ( incorrect ) off ramp. Nothing to do but make a quick crossover to I80 hoping to get back onto I680. Impossible as we discovered. So we drove about a bit and finally got back on I80 heading West to San Francisco with no idea what to do next when a sign directed us to Napa via 12 West. Worst case scenario we could return to the Napa area and turn around and start over again.   Fortunately after a few miles Colin was able to do a very creative turn around on Highway 12, certainly not legal, but fortunately the traffic disappeared for a few moments and he was able to complete the maneuver.

So now were heading in the right direction and having a do over of our I680 nightmare. We were both extra vigilant. I managed to take photos to we could recreate what had gone so wrong the first time.

The correct signage

The right turn after the signage. We took the same turn as the car on the right did. However our turn was in fact next to the white car on the left.

This is the sign that was hidden by the yellow 25 sign with the right turn arrow. You can just barely see the orange sign to the extreme left of the photo that was the indication of our right turn. So two right turns, one behind the other with poor signage. Bottom line we got on the freeway and began to relax.

Once again we were traveling down the road relaxing. As I took a sip of my cold coffee, I remarked on how fortunate we were to be traveling this route on a Saturday with less traffic. I happened to look to my right and saw an older car with the driver frantically gesturing with his arm out his window towards the back of the RV. I calmly told Colin that we might yet have another problem. The tires seemed fine and all in the mirrors and backup camera indicated that all else appeared fine. But we both knew that someone would not go to all that trouble for nothing. It took over a mile to find enough of a shoulder for us to pullover on.

Yup we had a problem alright.

Yup we had a problem alright.

There was a piece of metal that had plunged into the bumper of our tow car. The sparking of the metal being dragged along the interstate had caught that driver’s attention. Who knows what could have or would have happened next if he had not alerted us.

Colin’s foot in relation to the piece of metal. Defintely something large enough to do some serious damage. Upon refection we both recall having seen this metal piece on the highway as we did our second and proper exit for I680. Colin says he that he quickly made and effort to centre the RV over it but likely it got caught in the mud flap and thrown back to the car. kk

Things happen in threes and we both touched wood ( who knows, it might help ) and carried on  What else could we do?  By now I had a headache and my eyes were seriously watering and were sore.  Not a good travel day at all.

So we continued on with the journey.

Hitting the road and heading south

FYI, this is the second post within 12 hours.

We are off early this morning.  Happy to be traveling south through this area on a Saturday and hopefully we will avoid huge amounts of traffic.  Sadly I won’t be able to complete the winery tours before I leave.  Oh I did edit my photos and once again just too much to put into a post at the last moment.  Don’t worry, I will catch up, too many wonderful experiences not to share.  We spent Friday doing some RV chores and last minute grocery and wine shopping.

We shopped at both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, a first for us.  How lucky all you Americans are to have such wonderful stores near you.  I would love to live near great sources of tasty and good for you food at such low prices.  Of course I happened on a wine deal at Whole Foods.  Suzanne you might want to check this out.  Quail Creek has a wine bottled in Napa and it is $4.99 per bottle but today in was on at 30% off so I only paid $3.50 plus tax per bottle.  I purchased both the Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinot Grigio and have only had the latter thus far.  Not bad for the price.

I leave you today with some scenes from our days here in Napa Valley.
