Last night in the USA in 2016

PIcatgo Peak, love this mountian but this year we were jist driving past.

Picacho Peak State Park, love this mountain but this year we were just driving past.  Loved our visit last year, maybe next year.

Hot, hot hot! We have created a dog firnedly enviroment.

Hot, hot hot! We have created a dog friendly environment.  The umbrella keeps the sun off Caeli who rarely sits on me ( she prefers Colin ) .  Carmeh cannot take the heat at all and suffers.  The cardboard map cover over the dog fence keeps enough sun off of her to keep her happy.

Love the Tuscon overpass artwork.

Got to our Amado, AZ, RV Park and welcomed Carol and Bill for a visit about 90 minutes later.

We knew that they were here through Carol’s blog, The Golden Years.  We actually met them last year in Mazatlan when we also met Tioga George. It was a rushed visit as we already had plans to meet other friends for dinner.  No worries as we will for certain catch up with them in Mazatlan.  Such an interesting couple not to mention their trip from Los Angeles to Argentina in a 24 foot RV with 5 kids 😯 in 1978.  You must Google it.

So we sort of ushered out Carol and Bill as Rochelle and Michael arrived.  They had joined us last December on the Isla for several weeks.  This was our third winter of meeting up with these special people.  Amazing how blog readers become good friends.

They picke us u[ wnad we went to a wondeful restaurant in TUbac

They picked us up and we went to a wonderful Mexican restaurant in Tubac, very near where they live.  FYI, fabulous margaritas.

A great evening with not enough time to visit either set of friends.  We are so fortunate to have so many friends wherever we travel.  We had only been at the Napa RV park for 20 minutes when we ran into business friends from Kelowna, then again in Palm Springs where we ran into two sets of friends.  Again we ran into two sets of friends here in Amado, Arizona, just a few miles north of the Mexican border.  We are blessed to have so many friends not only at home but where we travel.

Then there are all you wonderful blog readers, some of whom become real life friends.  Life is good.

We traveled 150 miles toady.

We drove 158 miles today.

It has been an amazing day. I do have to say it seems very hot here for this time of year.  We had both A/C’s going to cool it down once we stopped.  I expect that the temps will drop overnight.

They have all kinds of stuff to sell here. Something for everyone. Normally I find the prices too hight but tonight we found three pots that will look great on our site in the Isla. I wil take a photo for you once we have them planted.

I will take a photo for you once we have them planted.  The irony is that they were made in Mexico for sale in the USA.  I was happy to buy them as they are perfect and I know I would never find something like this where we are in Mexico.

Que Pasa

Our eight days here in Palm Springs have flown by.  Lots of things on the to do lists.  We don’t feel rushed but have had no time to sit and read nor play the guitar.  I guess that will have to wait for the Isla.  The election and post election nonsense is a time taker.

Our November calendar photo. This is the last bit of rad we drive before we get to the RV park and the girls know it. Only five more sleeps.

After a long day of shopping at Walmart, Lowe’s and Trader Joe’s we stopped for lunch.  Much to my delight a bottomless glass of champagne  was being offered.  I got a full bottle and there was more if I drank it all.  I did bring the rest of the bottle home for later.  It was very nice.  A perfect perk to the day.  I really like this trend!

This was the perfect place to have the RV washed. Colin will wash and wax it once again before we leaver Mexico, likely in February.

It was the best cleaning we have ever had done here in the US. The RV is spotless and as there is no rain in the forecast it should stay that way.

Roger and Sara dropped by in a surprise visit. We used to RV with Roger and Susie ( she had to stay behind in Canada for a weeks ) on the Isla.  We spent several winters together before they stopped coming to Mexico.  They have many dreams on their plate and have not been to the Isla for a few winters now.  Such a lovely surprise.  We miss you Susie.  The three doxies remembered  each other and it was a great reunion.

I have had some questions in the past week and this is a good time to answer them.

Chris asked “Looking at the picture of the metal piece that pierced your PT Cruiser, I can’t tell what it is. Have you determined what it might be?”
First off have a Chevy HHR.  We have no idea what the piece of metal was but it does appear to have had a handle at one point.  We think it might be part of the mechanism that you would use on your trailer to level it higher or lower.

Gene in Ohio asked “Do you not have a GPS? The Garmin products show exit ramps easily on a screen that even looks like the road you are traveling. As far as the sign goes for I-80 Sacramento, it clearly was not the way you wanted to go and you can see even up to the next sign that there is another sign yet to come. True, there are multiple signs blocking a clear view, but there was also evidence that another green highway sign was ahead. I always write down the roads I need to make turns before I depart for unfamiliar highways so that even tough I also use a GPS, I have my paper maps that I trust more. You were very fortunate to not have that piece of metal penetrate your tire. Thank goodness we have some considerate drivers on the road.”

No we don’t have GPS, instead we have a CPS, a Contessa Positioning System and it has worked perfectly for over 15 years.  Perhaps because we were so high up in the RV neither of us saw the sign.  It was a very poor exit.  It was not till we were well into our turn onto the wrong exit that we saw the sign.  We are talking about the I 680 sign re the turn error which was our second incident that day.  The I 80 Sacramento was the way we wanted to go.  We had to back track for one exit in order to head south in I 680.  I, as navigator, was totally prepared with a paper map as well as some printed out Google Maps including close ups.  I knew where the exit was supposed to be but it was not there.  I even had the exit number, it was just one of those flukes.  As for your comment that it was evident that the sign was there, that is because I took that photo as we passed the first sign on our second time around.  Trust me there was no way to see it the first time as we exited before our intended exit.  For those who want to reread my post on the incidents click here.

The last question was from Anne who wanted to know which shoes I wore to walk over 14,000 steps per day.  In all honesty I have only done over 15K once and over 14K once.  I actually usually average between 8 – 10 K per day.  I suspect that that will increase once we are on the beach.  On the beach I go barefoot.

These are what I call my walking shoes. They are the Mojave model made by Vionic but sadly are no longer being made.  I love them so much that I went online and found four pair and ordered them just before we left.  Hopefully they will last me for many years to come.  I love the high support arch.  I can walk forever in these.

Colin discovered the most fabulous RV parts store just down the road from us, called Blair Station RV. One of the things he purchased were new water hoses. The white hose from Camping World shown on the bottom has poor connections, they are very flimsy and distort easily.  The newer blue hose has machined end fittings and we no longer have any leaks.  The perfect water hose.

Just a few hours agor we had an Isla reunion here in Palm Springs.

Just a few hours ago we had an Isla reunion here in Palm Springs.  Note the three weiner dogs.  From left to right, Budd, Wendy, Roger with Sara on his lap, Contessa holding Caeli and Colin holding Carmeh.

This morning Colin noticed Budd walk past us in the distance on our morning walk.  There is only one Budd that walks this earth.  Sure enough Budd and Wendy had arrived here at Catalina Spa RV Park yesterday.  How amazing is that?  So I got in touch with Roger and we had a happy hour at Wendy’s.  We are just back from a great few hours together.  FYI Budd and Wendy and their sweet dog Flossie own a home on the Isla and we will see them in early December.  Not only do they have a home in Mexico but also in Seal Beach, California 😀

Tomorrow we hit the road on the final leg of our journey to the Isla, aka Stone Island/ Isla de la Piedra, just south of Mazatlan.  Stay tuned for our day to day journey south.

Joshua Tree National Park

Love the turtle.

Love the turtle.

Yesterday we spent the day at Joshua Tree.  Just us, the girls and a few thousand other visitors.  It was a first visit for us.  It never occurred to us that yesterday being Remembrance Day was a holiday for everyone.  Everyday for us is a holiday, well at least till May when we get back to work.  The plus was that there was no charge to enter the park because of the holiday, so we saved $20.00.  However we were shocked that the girls were not allowed paws down on the ground other than the campground areas or 100 feet from a parking area.  We have carry bags for them but even that was not allowed so that really did affect our visit.  There is no way we could have left them back at the RV for over 7 hours on their own, especially as Carmeh needs to eat at certain times during the day.  We also never leave them for over five hours.  So we did the best we could, sometimes taking turns staying with the car while the other went and checked out a trail.  I do have to say how disgusted we were at all the dog poop laying on the ground in the campgrounds.  No wonder they don’t want pets in the park.  A few people are ruining it for others.

Joshua Tree is a transition between two deserts.

Throughout this vast park you can see examples of both the Mojave and the Colorado desert landscapes.

Of course Joshua trees are predominate throughout the area.

Did you know that Joshua trees really aren't a tree? They are a member of the agave family as they have fibrous interior.

We read that

We read that these boulders were formed about 250 million years ago before the time of the dinosaurs.  Time prevents me from explaining the process but in short form, cracks in the rocks and water are the keys to the appearance of the rocks today.

Some of the boulders appers to have been carved into a varity of shpes

Some of the boulders appear to have been carved into a variety of shapes.  One can see faces, animals and there is even a Skull Rock which I thought was pushing it a bit.

This is called Arch Rock. I was ill prepared to walk the over .5 miles to see it. I was in walking shoes but with open toes which did not work on the up and down thick gravel path.

Such unusual terrain.

We truly enjoyed our day at Joshua Tree.  There are several campgrounds but the majority are for a maximum of 25 feet including your tow car.  I did speak to a Ranger before we left and was able to obtain the list with actual site numbers in the specific campgrounds that would accommodate an overall length of 35′.  There are even a few that will take a 38 – 42′ maximum length.  So we would be able to get our RV in, although Colin would rather not try to negotiate the tight turns, but not our car.  So we will have to wait until the girls are no longer with us before we return.  I had so hoped that we could camp in the park and leave the girls in the RV while we checked out the various trails.  But you might be able to try it.  The cost is $18.00 – $20.00 per night to camp.

Wish I could share more sunset photos with you but we have not had any sunsets to speak of.  You just might have to wait till we get to Mexico for the next sunset photo.

The end of our wonderful time in Napa

This is part two of day 2 of our Napa winery tour.  Part one can be found here.

I had done some reading before leaving home including some recommendations on Trip Advisor.

s

We were on are way up, way up to the top of the highest hills to check out a winery described as having breath taking views.

I navigated by what we later found out was the little used back mountainous road.  I had a small map with little detail.  Twas a thrilling ride dodging the crumbling asphalt and pot holes.  As we climbed Colin kept asking me if we were on the right road.  I thought so and it was true, sort of.  At least it was an interesting drive.  We did get to the Cade Winery to find only one other vehicle in the parking lot.  We weren’t on the grounds five minutes when someone came up to us and asked if we had booked a tour, which we had not.  We were asked to leave as they could not have us on the property if we had no paid reservation for a tasting/tour.  Very uppity and rude.  They were even known for their Sauvignon Blanc wines and it wasn’t like they were busy.

The view was lovely but not the drive nor the attitude.

The view was lovely but not the drive nor the attitude of the people on site.  We did find the proper road for our way back down to the valley.

Our next stop at the Beringer Winery was not planned. But I do enjoy their PInot Grigio and the girls needed lunch and a walk.

A flight of three champagne tastings for $25.00!  I barely had enough money but I was compelled.  The lady said she felt like she was robbing my piggy bank.  I went with the Prestige Tasting.

Such a very lovely area. We saw many groups of what appeared to be locals enjoying themselves with a glass of bubbly or in some cases a bottle to be shared among friends.  I could see myself hanging out here with some special friends.

There I am getting my next glass. I wondered how many people took advantage of the systam.

There I am getting my next glass. I wondered how many people took advantage of the system.  It didn’t take me long to see that with the many different people pouring behind the counter that it was an honor system.  I could have had my first or second tasting over and over.  There was no way to note how many of each tasting you had.  But frankly the glasses were full tastings and one can only drink so much champagne.  It would have been different if we didn’t have the girls waiting in the car for us.  What I mean is that I could have taken more time to enjoy each glass but still it was the end of the day and enough was enough.

Yes I could easily spend an afternoon here.

It was

It was difficult to leave this enchanted winery.  Easily our favorite of the trip.  A perfect way to end our winery tours.

s

The girls were happy to be heading back to the RV.  Carmeh looked like she was sleepy and was resting her head on Caeli’s head.

We really had a wonderful time in Napa and the valley.  But we are equally enjoying our time here in Palm Springs where our focus is on our finally preparation for four months in Mexico.  Next post will be on what we have been up to these past few days.
