It’s Carnaval time in Mazatlan

Carnaval started this past Thursday, the 8th.  So we figured that Friday would be a good night to head out and check out the Plazuela Machado and see what was happening.

Friday was a good day just enjoying the first blue sky hot day we have had in a long while.  The weather has been good but not great as is normal for this time of year.

There is a three block corridor of vendors one has to walk thru to get to the square.

It was actually rather quiet which surprised us.  Mostly non Mexicans except for these fellows setting up a photo op location.  The lady under the big black hat is a tourist.  I have no idea how much her husband paid to take the photo.

We ate at La Bohemia as they have a great menu and a generous wine pour.  We took our time and ordered one course at a time as we were not in a rush.  About 9PM faces started to change and we were now seeing mostly Mexicans.  Most Americans and Canadians eat early ( and go to be early )!   It wasn’t long before the tables around us filled and the Plazuela became increasingly crowded.

Just as we were finishing our meal Sofia ( my wonderful masseuse ), her boyfriend Brad and his best friend since grade two, Paul ( from Denver ) joined us.

Lots of laughs and some conversation as the music allowed. Photo courtesy of Paul’s smart phone.

Masks borrowed from Sofia.  She is totally prepared for Carnaval and carries a lot of stuff in her bag 🙂

The main band in the kiosk was of course a banda group and they were loud.  It wasn’t long before other banda groups showed up.  These guys were just two feet away from our table.

Then there were more and more banda bands around us, actually around the entire Plazuela.  They are all playing at the same time but mostly different songs.  I did this brief clip so you could hear what it was like.  There are at least two different bands playing in this one minute video.

In fact the noise level was rising to the point that you wanted to cover your ears.  It was time to move on and as I stood I looked over the area and noted the large number of banda bands everywhere.  I said to Colin that we should go for walk around the Plazuela and count the groups.  It was easier to count the number of tubas as they stood out.  I counted 25 different banda bands pretty much all playing at the same time.  The noise was almost deafening.  Talk about energy.

There were a few vendors from Columbia set up in front of the Indian restaurant With some very different items.

I purchased a lovely gold plated ( nickel free ) bracelet.  The piece is a reproduction of the original developed by pre-columbian cultures that inhabited Columbian territory between 800BC and 1600AD.

We got home on the stroke of midnight.  Certainly a fun filled Carnaval evening.

Our February calendar girls

I remember taking this photo about a year ago.  Carmeh was weaker and enjoyed sleeping in the sun.

You never know how a beach walk is going to turn out

We walked even further on this walk and saw something white sticking out just beyond the berm and walked up the path to investigate.

Someone has built themselves a lovely home and is now adding an addition.

Nice view!

Growing in the sand.

…and more to come.

We turned back and started our trek back home when this helicopter came racing down the beach fairly low to the sand.  That is another white home on the beach, this one abandoned.

These folks ended getting sand in their faces as the helicopter lowered even more.

Colin thinks it was a pilot in training.  They were wearing proper uniforms.

You can see them wiping their faces as the helicopter turned around before coming towards us.

Then the horses came up behind us.

As he passed us he indicated that he thought the helicopter was loco and the noise was bothering his horses.

Turned out to be a very foggy morning.

The day ended on a colorful note.

Just another day on the Isla.

Critter in the RV

Over the years we had had cats under our bed ( no way anything can get in now ), mice inside the RV, a dead rat in the water compartment ( talk about a horrific odor ), something running up and down between the bedroom wall panels ( it finally died ), a few dead mice hidden behind cabinets but scouted out by the girls ( they were great critter hunters ), an iguana living in the spare tire rim on the roof and now suddenly a new sound.   Some sort of flapping over and over.  Colin checked the roof where we thought it was coming from.  We looked everywhere and Colin would run outside once the sound started.  It was mostly in the morning.  Sometimes it sounded like the roof vent lid slapping up and down quickly but that was not it either.  We tried everything we could to figure it out.  This had all started once we got back from our road trip.  So what happened while we were away?

By chance Colin bent down to pick something up and noticed our shiny chrome license plate holder.

It looks like a mirror.

He began to think.  Sure enough a bird has been sitting on an area of the tow car hitch, as you can see in the first photo just about the two blue coils.  That area was full of bird poop.

So some bird had fallen in love with itself and was tapping away at it’s reflection.  We tried to simulate a bird tap with our finger and it was very close to the sounds we have been hearing.

Problem solved with a piece of cardboard.

No more critter noise 😀

Best party ever

Yesterday was a special 75th birthday celebration for one of our RVers.  Dave is the youngest 75 year old ever.  Heck he paddle boards almost everyday not to mention all the other neat things that he does.

He invited at least 60 – 70 ( or more, I never counted ) of his friends.

In celebration of this special occasion Dave treated us all to dinner, drinks and a wonderful live band.

I can’t recall what we were singing but we were the backup chorus singers to the band!!  Aha just sent an email to Audrey, second from the left and it turns out that we were singing Hallelujah.  Gotta love internet.

That is me at the right edge of the photo and my margarita.  Well one of them.  Sometimes I can only drink one or two at the most but I will confess to four last night.  What to do when a nice looking waiter comes by and offers you a drink?  Please note the bottle of water beside my margarita, I drank a few of bottles along with my drinks as well as the melted ice cubes.  Plus lots of dancing was involved.  I can’t dance if I am tipsy 🙂  All was well and absolutely no side effects at all this morning.  Must be all that dancing.

Dave was so happy and the band was perfect.  Dave is an American from Utah but someone had pinned a Canadian pin on his shirt making him an honorary Canadian.

Happy 75th Dave.  Note that the candles were 57!  Love that logic.

Lots of dancing…..

Funny thing is that I told Colin as we walked over to Carmelita’s where the party was held, that I didn’t feel like dancing that night. Guess who was first up on the floor?  Well they were playing one of my favorites, ‘Under the Boardwalk’.  In this photo I am dancing with Feddie, the owner of one of the two larger stores on the Isla.  At this point I had been dancing for a long time.

A great time was had by all.

Even the kitchen staff were dancing.

More dancing. Actually pretty much everyone danced. You just could not help but dance as the music was so good.  This was the same band that played at the December posada, the night I got locked in the bathroom.  http://www.contessajewall.com/oldblog/2017/12/22/i-got-locked-in-the-bathroom-again/

I can’t say enough about this band. They are called ‘la fusa grupo musical’. They play all types of music and have a huge repertoire.  In fact most of last night was different music than what they had played in December.

Dave loves their music also which is why he hired them for his party.

Definitely best party ever.  Some of the guests doing the singing.

Already today some RVers are talking about hiring the band ( perhaps 150 pesos/$10.00 CAD/ $8.00 USD ) per person.  Fifty people would buy us three hours of music.  All we have to do is get one of the restaurants to be willing to let us bring a band in and order our food and alcohol individually which won’t be a problem at all.  Certainly a win win situation.  Yes the music was that good.

Definitely the best party ever.  Thank you Dave for creating such a very special evening for us.  I can only hope that your birthday was as special to you as it was to all of your friends.
