Another day

I must be in Mexico as I suddenly have over 180 spam per day in the comments section of my blog posts.

Saw our first heron of the season on our walk yesterday.

A long weekend here celebrating the Revolution.  Busy on the beach and an increase in the noise level.

We continued to fine tune the to do list.  Kathleen and Ron, Colin is working on adding back lighting to his piece of driftwood aka a piece of art.  He knows that you appreciate his ‘art’.  Love you both and hope to see  you soon.  Sending healing thoughts.

Janet and Grant dropped in for a visit.  We were later surprised by a visit from long time friends going back to our Acapulco days.  More on that tomorrow.

Another great end to the day.

So much color.

The sunset went on and on.  Colin was able to create this extraordinary panoramic sunset for us all.

Sometimes I wonder how I get so much done in a day

Yesterday, Saturday morning, our second morning here on the Isla, I woke up confused.  Why could I hear the distant hum of traffic?  Where was I?  A few moments passed and I realized that now it was not traffic but the sound of the ocean.  Ah, peace.  But that peace was not going to last the day but it would eventually return.

Colin was still in bed when I slipped outside to take this photo  We have a new foal on the Isla.  Happens every year 🙂

Always time to stop for a chat with a neighbor.

We did get out for our first beach walk of the season.  There was a lot of debris on the beach after Hurricane Willa.  As it turns out, only part of the beach has been cleaned up, the tourist areas.  The further we walked the more mess we saw.  It will take a long time for high tides to clear this up.

Then it was time for more to do’s.  I am putting together some solar lights.

Twenty two of them.  Turns out I had purchased a bunch and forgot that and then bought some more!

Just I as we were having lunch ( at 3PM ), two fellows dropped in.  It was Dr. Terry, our US chiropractor here in Mazatlan.  He does some work out of his home here a few days per week.  He never got to Mazatlan last season so it was nice to see him.  His friend was Mike, whom we had met at a Carnival party earlier this year at the home of mutual friends.   After they left I went back in to heat up the second half of our lunch when we heard a hola from behind us.  It was Eric, the RV tech.  He was here to install our new rooftop  air conditioner units.  Like right now 8-O.  Only problem was that we here heading out to dinner with a group from the RV park for dinner in Mazatlan at 5PM.  We didn’t say a thing and did all we could to help.  Eric is beyond busy and we were lucky that he fit us in right away.  He is mostly doing emergency repairs at the moment.  We have a long list that we sent him many months ago but this was a priority.

So great to get these huge boxes out of our bedroom. It has been a long seven weeks living with them.

Some discussion as to how they were going to get those hundred pound plus units on the roof.

Colin showing how big they are.

First you have to disconnect the electronics before the old AC roof unit can be removed.

Coming down.

Colin was so very concerned about the old unit not hitting the side of the RV.

One down.

Eric has a strap over his shoulder with a clip that latched onto the AC unit.  He was thrown off a horse this past summer and landed ten feet in front of the horse on his back.  Cracked ribs and pain, still to this day.  He said that as long as he kept his back straight he could manage to lift the hundred pound weight.

Not an easy feat.  Gustavo has this huge grimace on his face as he helps pull it up.

And it is up.  Colin could not watch.

Two down and two up.  He had to drill out some bolts on both units as they were frozen into place.

Meanwhile, my dear blog reader Anne, who just happened to show up here last winter is back.  Nice to reconnect but the timing was bad.  We had a very short visit but she is just down the road at Rae’s old place so we will see her often.

Working on the front AC during that fabulous sunset I posted about yesterday.

Eric was going to do a few other things for us but someone from RV2 came by with a water related emergency.  So once Eric got the second AC unit installed he left.  We will see him when we see him.  Hopefully we will be here when he shows up 😉  So he was here 2 hours and 15 minutes and charged us 1300 pesos for the install labor.   Yes that means only $85.00 CAD or $65.00USD.  I purchased the AC units on Amazon at this link https://amzn.to/2FFAkXM for only $726.00US each.  A real bargain between the price and the install.  Likely we saved close to $3000.00 CAD.  Almost worth the risk of getting them into Mexico.

Meanwhile the group from RV1 had left the Isla and were heading over to Macaws for dinner.  I made a call to let them know that we would be able to join them after all.  We got there about thirty minutes after they did.  They had ordered and we were not far behind.  The food was great and there was live music.  We ended up dancing quite a bit much to our surprise.  So much fun. We haven’t danced since we were last here in Mazatlan.

Colin danced with Diane as well.  The group was ready to move on to the Plazuela Machado for dessert but we were not ready to leave.  We said we would meet them there.

Then we bumped into Carol and Bill  sitting at the bar, who used to RV here at Tres Amigos on the Isla way before us and this is our tenth winter here.  We have also seen them in an RV park where they worked back in BC.  They now live here in Mazatlan and run the ‘Mazatlan Animal Rescue’.  We spent a good deal of time catching up and throwing in a few dances here and there.

Sadly we realized that we had to say adios to Carol and Bill and move on to find our fellow RVers, which we did.  Turns out that they were still waiting for a table for coffee and dessert.  We did a tour around the plazuela and found that they now had a table.  We really did not want to stay and then Pierre and Diane wanted to leave as well so we did.  We got back and I did that brief post last night.  It had been a long and very very full day with visits from friends and Eric & the AC install, then a great meal and some dancing.  Overall it was a full and fun day.  Amazing that we have only been here three full days.

A very long day

But we got so much accomplished and manged to have a lot of fun doing it.  However I will have to leave the telling of the days events and the photos until the next post.  It is 11:45PM and I am done for tonite.   For certain much more tomorrow.  A special thank you for all your comments.  So wonderful hearing from blog readers we knew way back in 2004 and Joan who is reliving her TV travels through my posts and then ‘Peter from Maine’ who was one of the first, dare I say, hippies here on Stone Island way back in the day.  There was nothing here but the cocos ( coconut palm trees ) and one or two small shack type restaurants in those days.  I will never forget your surprise visit to me here on the Isla Peter.  He has been reading my blog since 2010 and you can click here to read about his visit to me in 2011.  I am happy to be your link to your beloved Isla.  These sunset photos are for you.

I was happy with this sunset photo.

But then it changed.

Magnificent.

A full first day

Thank you to those that took a moment to leave a comment on my last post.  It really means a lot and encourages to me to continue.  Today was a busy day and I didn’t get many photos as I was too busy just doing things.

When we got up at 7AM we noticed this cat sleeping on a chair next door.  Then at our next glance outside we see it drinking from the water container Ismael used to water our plants with while we were away.

Definitely a Siamese and it had on a collar.  Several hours later I discovered that it belongs to our neighbors.  It is basically  an outdoor cat that is allowed to roam free day and night and it has been using our empty site as its play and litter area.

By 8:10AM Colin and Ismael were at our bodega and loaded these two trucks to the brim with our stuff.  It did not take long for it all to be unloaded.

The two drivers along with Colin and Ismael were also able to move Colin’s piece of log art into the proper position.

Ismael took off to RV2 to wash an RV as he had been requested to.  Meanwhile we power washed all of the stuff.  Hmm we do have a lot of stuff…..mostly chairs.

Once again someone parked their vehicle on our patio and dripped oil onto the painted area. Colin was able to get most of it off.   However we did have some bare spots and lost a bit more paint because of the power washer.  Guess we will be doing some painting in the next little while.  But the patio looks much better and I was able to strategically cover the bare spots with carpet.

We took a wee break and drove over to take in our laundry.  Lots of new things happening here on the Isla.  Sorry but I forgot to bring my camera.  Next time, I promise 🙂

Ismael was free by 2PM and he and Colin got the dust screen hung. So very important as it really does decrease the dust we get from passing vehicles, ATV’s and horses.  This is always our priority.  While waiting for Ismael we did get a lot done in our exterior set up.

Looks like the Tecate truck got stuck on the beach.  But what was it doing on the beach?

We arrived yesterday and today two other RV’s ( Ferne and 15 minutes later, Diane and Pierre ) arrived.  So we had an impromptu happy hour at Jose’s and Pat’s.  Several new people here in the park this winter.

It was a long day with a fun ending at the happy hour but soon the bugs began to nip.  Tomorrow is yet another day with a blank canvas.  We shall have to see how we fill it.

It’s good to be back

Seven weeks ago today we left our home in Kelowna.  We have driven 3,797.4 miles, I have written 48 blog posts, we have had many adventures and seen untold new sights but now the wheels have stopped rolling.  I am looking forward to staying in one place for the next four months.  But oh to be back here on the Isla, to see the ocean, to hear the ocean and to breathe the fresh air, what can I say?  My heart actually stopped for a beat as I took in the beauty right at our doorstep.

We were driving by 7:10 this morning on a mostly broken road.

We felt like we were riding a bucking bronco.  The worst ever this section of road has been. ( right to the start of the Culiacan- Mazatlan autopista ).  We even complained at the first toll both and the senora just agreed that yes it was terrible.  Our cost to drive these 178 miles on a high end toll road is 697 pesos/$45.28CAD or $34.39USD.  The American dollar is doing very well against the Mexican peso.

First time we have ever been stopped by a police check on the autopista.

As we came off the autopista and around the curve we were startled to see cattle on the road.  Good thing that we had slowed for the curve.

Now that is a truck full of junk!  If you look closely, the rear axle on the left doesn’t even have a tire on it.

Almost two weeks after the Dia de Muertos ( Day of the Dead) celebrations the cemeteries are still full of flowers.  Sitting up high in the RV we get to see different things.

Well this was a total surprise.  Most of the road to the Isla is being made into two lanes in each direction, starting from the turn off the airport road.  There are sections where the narrow road ( because they removed the shoulder ) has a good three foot drop off with only inches to spare when you pass oncoming traffic.  It wasn’t fun being a passenger, can’t imagine driving it.

Yet more cattle on the road. This time there was a young boy on a horse working to keep control of his charges.

Things did not go as planned once we arrived but no worries, we turned on the AC and did a deep clean within the RV and set up the inside of our home.  Tomorrow we will deal with the rest.  We had planned to possibly meet a few friends at El Velero for a live music early dinner but we worked right through to 5PM and we were both tired.  Tomorrow promises to be a full day.

Two boats in the bay and Mother Nature did not disappoint.

So very happy to be home.  Our drive today was only 194 miles.
