Do you BOONDOCK ???

Do you know what it is?  Even Google has no definition for it.

So I asked Chris from www.livingboondockingmexico.blogspot.ca  to give me his definition as he prefers to boondock.  This is what he sent me.

“For me, boondocking is dispersed camping in undeveloped areas outside of  designated campgrounds, and includes the ability to stay in cities or where parking may be permitted such as parking lots, rest stops, gas stations and churches, with permission of the owners.   Boondocking means you have an RV that is self-sufficient, not requiring hookups to electricity, water and other services.”

Would you like to try it?

You can, while travelling in the USA or Canada. I bet that Chris will be the first Mexican location to sign up.  There is now an organization that registers people willing to let you park on their property at no charge.  Just think how much money you could save while travelling from point A to point B without having to overnight at an RV Park.  You don’t have to be able to allow others to park on your property if you don’t have the space.  You can sign up either way.

Boondockers Welcome  is a growing organization with over 746 free overnight RV parking locations.

Yes there is a an annual membership fee but it is less than the cost of one night in an RV park.  Why don’t you visit their website http://www.boondockerswelcome.com/ and take their tour.

They are also offering you, my readers, a discount of 10% if you use the following coupon code to sign up:

Plus you get a free Boondocking in New Mexico ebook when you sign up – a $17.00 value!

Would you like to boondock in New York City for $20.00 per night?  Check this link out.

This is one of our favorite boondocking places, just south of Ajo, Arizona.

  1. Thanks for the post….Just wanted to clarify that the link for the New York Citylocation is for a public campground – not part of http://www.boondockerswelcome.com – hence the camping fee.
These three Boondockers Welcome members are, however, offering FREE overnights just as close to NYC (some with electric and water).

Love the photo of boondocking near Ajo. I’m presuming it’s just south of Why? If so, it’s the same location we’ve stayed in often ourselves. The desert is great – it’s the rest of the country where the other boondocking options come in handy 🙂

Croft…..I agree…more for the convenience. We can go 10days if we are careful.

Mike….welcome to the comment section of the blog. A bank and a car dealership….different. Good tip on Lowe’s re the wifi. Thanks.

George…we know you like to save the dollars. Good for you.

Chris….looking forward to hearing about all your adventures.

Ruth….thanks for the info we Facebook, we don’t do it. Yes we have solar panels also and love to dry camp but just too busy getting from Canada to Mexico to enjoy it.

We often do a form of boondocking when we travel. We will take advantage of free parking when we just need a place to pull over and park for the night. We don’t do it so much to save money but more for the convenience. Parking in an RV park involves registering and in most cases, unloading the car and dolly to back into a space. In the morning we have to hook up the car and dolly before we can leave.

We can go four or five days without dumping and can usually get water at gas stations so we really have no need for full hookups when traveling. If we plan on staying a few days somewhere or there is something we want to see, we pay to park.

We like grocery store parking lots because it is convenient to grab something to microwave for dinner and there is usually some form of security provided. Plus, saving the $20 to $30 never hurts 😉

    Hi there,

Love your blog and wish I could talk the wife into Mexico… Love to join you down there.

We are in Illinois and try to go down to Florida as often as we can every couple years. And we never stop at campgrounds along the way. We have stopped overnight in a Bank, Car Dealership and of course the big box stores. Now Lowes Home Improvement is a favorite now as they have free WIFI. How cool. No more busy, noisy Flying J’s for us.

So it is destination campgrounds only for us these days.

  4. Boondocking, yep we do a lot year round, we have solar, generator and sometimes are offered 15 amp hook up 10 days on water and sewage if we conserve, works great for us and saves a lot of money.

I love the pic of your motorhome sitting out there in the wild! What a great place to wake up to. We will be doing quite a bit of boondocking this winter as well as our trip through the U.S. and Canada in April.

  6. Yep, we love boondocking and we have found some really beautiful spots. Like Chris we are also totally set up for it with solar and have also learned how to be very conservative with our fresh water and our black/grey water. Boondockers Welcome also have a Facebook page for those that use Facebook.
