Ripples

Odd demarkation in the lake last evening.  The geese stayed in the smooth area nibbling on weeds.

Just a bit later the sun came out from where it was hiding behind clouds.

This morning the light emphasized the ripples on either side of the food/weed patch. The current was actively moving from the left to the right except in the middle where it was calm.

My friend Cindy organized another drive for the food bank a few days ago. They collected enough food to fill a pick up and an SUV plus $725.00. That is what I call a positive ripple.

Now that is a huge ripple.

Where do I sign up to get a reset on 2020?

Feeling sad right now

The tears and sobs are directly a result of a novel I just finished.  “Lily and the Octopus” written by Steven Rowley.  Lily is a dachshund which is why I picked up the book in the first place about two years ago.  For some unknown reason I waited until this week to read it. I recently mentioned that I have been thinking about the girls a great deal of late and even thinking about getting another or even two more. However if that were to happen, our traveling days, other than in the RV would be over.  I really would like a good two or three more years of travel first. It was difficult to get into the novel and I almost gave up but by the time I got to page fifty I was hooked.

I just finished reading it about an hour ago and my heart is broken all over again. I feel like we lost the girls only hours ago. I so enjoyed the relationship between Ted and his dog Lily no matter how odd it seemed at times and weird the story was. They certainly loved each other. I was dismayed at the description of the end of Lily’s life only because it was exactly what I went through with our girls. The final moments were heart wrenching. Unlike Ted, I had a good friend Grant there to help.  Colin had to leave midway as it was too much for him. The book has a sweet unexpected ending which made reading it worthwhile despite my constant tears.

So that is why I am feeling sad.  I had a good cry in Colin’s arms, he has no idea what the book is all about other than it is about a red doxie. Happy I read it – I think.  Not necessary recommending it. You will have to decide. Some of the description reads ” Love is an act of courage. This is a story about that special someone:  the one you trust, the one you can’t live without. Lily and the Octopus reminds us how it feels to love fiercely, how difficult it can be to let go, and how the fight for those we love is the greatest gift of all.”

A bit of this and that

So glad that you all enjoyed the post yesterday on the baby ducks.  It was special to watch it evolve and to be able to share it with you.  Aren’t cameras great things?

I love this splash of colour.

Banana bread is now a given in our home. Back on May 10th.

This blog is a bunch of miscellaneous photos taken from a file called  Que Pasa. As you can see I continue to do my exercises twice per day as well as walk.

My computer desk has always had a shelf about five inches above the ground. However that meant that I could  never stretch my legs out in front of me. It was an annoyance but never a problem until my knee surgery back in January. With spare time on his hands, Colin decided to remedy the situation.  He took the shelf out and placed it up higher as you can see. Rather than a shelf it is now just a brace and gives me leg movement under my desk.  My roll top desk has always had leg room underneath but I now spend more time at the computer desk.

Very clever to take the shelf out and use it as a brace. I miss the shelf but have found another place for all those files.

A blast from the past, sent to me by my friend Jannose.  Neither of us can remember the date but it was either while I was still living in Edmonton and we visited Vancouver together for a function or when I had already moved  to Vancouver.  Either way it was at least forty five years ago. I always wore my hair short and in a frizzy perm. Funny, I recall the scarf but not the coat. Unlike me, Jannose has not changed a bit.

This one was baked June 2nd and Colin has declared it the best ever as he does every week. Have to agree, it is delicious.

Our potted cucumber plant ( grown from a seed ) is doing extremely well that we have had to made some modifications. Colin placed a few screws into our shed so that he had a place to run string up and down for more climbing support. This might be the main source of cukes for us this summer.  The two plants in the garden do not look promising although the seeds I planted a few weeks ago are up and looking healthy thus far but are only a few inches high. We already have several tiny cucumbers growing on this one.

Our first romaine from the garden. We have decided to just pick  a few of the outer leaves as needed rather that the entire plant.  That way it should last longer. Well I hope so.

We each had a small salad with some leftover goulash for lunch today.  This is the first time I have ever eaten fresh romaine out of the garden and it was extremely tasty.  I think I will be plant more next summer.

Sunset reflections a few evenings past.

Seriously, ducks can count!

It was like a gift, the day after my birthday, on May 23rd, we both while in different parts of the house, noticed a movement on the patio close to the lake. We called out to each other within moments.

Two extremely tiny ducklings seemed to appear out of nowhere.  They wobbled about a bit and kept stopping to rest, then they would toddle a wee bit further and collapse.  They did move from the patio closer to the hedge and then back again to the patio and the sun.  We were panicked, where was Mom, and how would we be able to keep them safe?

Suddenly Mom appeared, as if from nowhere. She stayed with her two babies. I wonder if they left the nest earlier than she had expected.

A few minutes later, there were three. They just hung around.

Things were happening quickly. Two more ducklings dropped out of the hedge.  One onto the glider and the other onto a table.

To put things into perspective, the ducklings  were popping out of the hedge behind the wind wheel and the first onto the seat of that glider and then, the second one, onto the table next to it. They both then jumped down to the patio and of course fell over.  At this point we realized that this was their first time out of the nest.

Mama waited and waited.  We are again getting concerned and wondering what was happening. I said that perhaps she was waiting for the rest of her kids. All these photos were taken from inside our home and we were being very careful to not frighten nor upset the ducks with any sudden movements. Now there were seven but Mama just stayed put and waited and walked back and forth. Suddenly two more appeared as they dropped out of the hedge.

Now Mama had her nine children and was on the move. She would not budge until she had her entire brood of nine. We thought she was taking them to the steps ( directly behind them all in the photo ) but she kept moving to the right of our patio.

This was the place she decided that they had to go down over the rocks and enter the water.  Some were eager, others rather reluctant.

Eventually they all made it into the lake. Such a lovely family.

We felt like we had experienced a miracle.  I guess it is all about being in the right place at a time. How fortunate that we have had time over the past weeks to observe nature around us, but this was over the top special. We couldn’t stop talking about what we had just witnessed. I do remember seeing a female duck sitting on top of the hedge and even have posted a photo of it. Later Colin took the ladder out and looked down into the hedge and saw where they had likely nested.

Exactly a week later, on May 30th, we saw Mom and nine kids float on past. It had to be our family, it just had to, as we have not seen any others out on the lake.

A walk in the park

Yesterday we had so much rain and it was cool.  Today was a mix of sun and cloud but still cool.  That just might be our new normal.  Our garden is growing but not very fast. Last year we had tomatoes on some of our plants by now, but I haven’t had a single yellow tomato flower. About ten days ago on a sunny day I snapped some photos for your while on one of our walks. I plan to make these photos into two posts as there are so many. Hope you enjoy these.

When was the last time you saw a trunk like this? Great idea as a planter.

I turned the corner and there was this splash of colour.

A very unique idea.

Not my idea of a light post but if you like gargoyles, why not?

I think that this couple did a wonderful job with their 5th wheel and add a room.

I haven’t seen bleeding hearts in a long time.  Combined with the lilac tree it made for a lovely tableau.

There were irises just a bit further in.

A lovely Japanese garden. The owner trims his plants with scissors. You have to come visit to check this one out.  Many more statues and everything is placed and manicured so precisely.

I appreciate the effort but personally this Snow White frightens me.

So many unique looks at every home.

I will share more another time.  Stay tuned for some other cute photos tomorrow.

Duh….I thought that I had published this last night but I guess I neglected to actually hit the publish button. I said to Colin that I was surprised that I never even received  one comment.
