The girls are picking new things up everyday. They definitely like to be mentally stimulated and challenged. So if any of you have any suggestions on how to entertain a puppy, never mind two, please share.
They really do not like to wear their harnesses.
They are also growing. They were never weighed because of Covid and having to see the vet for the first time in a van on the street for their shot and first exam. I weighed them last Friday on my cooking scale. I put them in a bowl on the scale. So a week ago, the oldest by 2.5 hours, Carlie, weighed 3.44 Ibs. Today she was 3.84lbs. Last week Ciela weighed in at 2.91 lbs and today she was 3.3lbs.
I am trying to get them used to them by putting the harnesses on for 15 – 20 minutes twice per day. They love being outside so much that they forget about the harness.
Remember how I could not make comments on others blog posts on Safari and how it came and went before I lost it forever? Fortunately I figured out how to make comments using Chrome. A few days ago I lost that ability. I am really hoping that it will sort itself out. Just know that I am reading your posts. Of course I am somewhat occupied with the new pups so I may not always email you back with a comment.
We did try to use a leash with them and that did not work. One was in the pen while Colin tried to walk the other. They are are still too young to walk on a leash. It won’t be too long now. Instead we are separately carrying them around the block everyday to get them used to being out on the street. Sometimes they get pats from people and other times they get to sniff another dog.
We were about two hours away from our first overnight stop last week on our way to pick up our chocolates, when I received a text. The wind here was coming from the west ( never happens ) and knocked a panel out of our fence. It was repaired just hours before we got back home last Wednesday.
Colin is getting better at figuring out which dog is which but we both still get mixed up numerous times a day. They have been here just over a week and we are seeing daily changes. It is amazing how fast they grow and how their individual personalities are developing. They still prefer to do things together but we separate them often and take turns playing with them. Sometime they nap in separate beds but not often. A few times we have had to put them into their crate with the door shut so that they rest. They don’t know when to stop. We are leaning to make good use of their nap time to get our things done. The best thing I ever did was to precook two weeks worth of meals so that we were free to be there for the twins. One of us is always watching them when they are awake.
Late last Thursday before dark we saw some birds far out on the lake. We were too busy with the girls to pay attention. Then Friday morning about 10AM I noticed the gathering. The eagles and a few other birds were feasting a carcass, likely a deer. At one point there were six baldheaded eagles there.
Shortly thereafter a coyote appeared and ate directly beside the eagles. An amazing show of nature.
Six hours alter there was not much left. By Saturday morning was all gone. Someone here in the park got some awesome shots but they are not mine to share. He was closer to them and had different lenses.
We found out that the third pup ( of the litter ) who we really came to like when we were there, was not picked up. The adoptive parents changed their minds but our breeder had some else in Edmonton who took her just a few days ago. Apparently she missed our two so badly that the breeder could not stand the crying all night and finely put her in with her mom. The good news is that she will have an older sister ( two years ) who also came from the same breeder. That will make the transition much easier for her. Who knows perhaps we will meet her in one of our trips to Edmonton.
The lake began to melt and then we had below freezing temps along with a few light snow flurries. So pretty.
They are getting closer in length everyday.
I broke out the teething rings. I do think that they are teething. But what do I know? They certainly like to chew, including whatever I am wearing.
We have been on the move since we left a week ago today. By the way the twins were born 8 weeks ago today. After 21 years of owning doxies I am still confused as to why the first so many months are counted in weeks and then suddenly it switches to months. So you have read about us picking them up Tuesday and our night in Canmore and getting home Wednesday and how that night ( Wed. – Thurs. ) was not so good. However the great news is that they slept the next night ( Thursday – Friday ) only waking up at 7:50AM this past Friday. I called it a miracle. Sadly the next night was not so good. That is why I was so tired yesterday and the reason my eyes were so sore and I had to wear sunglasses at night. However last night ( Sunday – Monday = today ) they slept in until 6:25AM. Sleep really is important and we are twenty plus years older since our first pup. Colin has the energy but I do not. Today we functioned much better with more sleep.
The photos in this post were all taken this past Friday, the 26th of February.
I think that they play too hard, so many squeals with ears being bit and throats, etc. Sharp puppy teeth.
Their first guitar concert.
I was wondering if they were teething as they are chewing everything including us. They are gentle with us in the morning but as their play becomes more intense as the day progresses we are fair game. So I decided to give them very cold carrots to chew on. They loved it but I realized that I probably should monitor how much they digest. So I will only give it to them every 3 – 4 days. They did enjoy it and it kept them from wrestling so much. They only ate 1/4 of this but they each had their own,
We have been having them do their business in a penned area but this past Friday Colin let them have a run in the yard. They loved it and now run up and down as much as they can.
The cold only seems to affect them in the very early morning and they shiver so much. Of course they get the heated towel treatment every time they come in. It really does take two of us to care for the twins. It didn’t not take us long to realize that our new gate is much too high for them and they could easily walk under it. That has been blocked for now.
The girls love their toys, thanks Aunty Cindy for the new ones. We have to keep changing them out to keep them stimulated. This is Ciela, she has a wrinkled forehead.
Never too young, Carlie likes to learn new things.
The twins are keeping us so busy that we have very little knowledge of what is happening in the world nor with Covid. I truly have no idea that two pups would wear us out this much. The thing is that what we do now affects our futures with them. The smallest of things needs to be done correctly. They remember everything and trust me they know exactly where to go that they should not because we left an area unblocked. I cannot believe how intelligent they are.
In a nutshell the biggest thing is us getting some sleep at night. Sorry but I just can’t continue, my eyes are burning looking at the computer screen plus they are waiting for me to feed them. More details another day…..
We took this video yesterday. These are the sweetest moments that we have ever had in the twenty years that we have had doxies. They are so laid back. Please turn your volume up to full as the few noises that they make need to be heard. Also if you can make the image a full screen. Sorry but this is six minutes long but worth every second if you are an animal lover. They are so innocent. More dialogue next post as I can only open the one eye ( too tired ).
