Update to the Mazatlan Road Travel Update

A few days ago I posted a series of emails between people regarding an SUV which was attacked leaving Mazatlan on MX15.  Here is the story written by the woman driving the SUV.  She is a Canadian and was traveling with her elderly parents.  MAZATLAN TO EDMONTON ABexplains what actually happened.  I find it interesting that the banditos did not do the shooting but rather the Mexican Marines.

In my mind this is not a part of the gang wars but rather a local criminal element preying on those traveling alone.  This story is similar to the one that happened this past April to a Victoria couple.  It seems both vehicles stopped at a Pemex on the outskirts of Mazatlan and then were stopped just a few miles along the autopista. It appears that someone at the Pemex alerted “friends” that a single vehicle with elderly people were heading their way.  I know exactly where these incidents took place and it is a good place for such an event to happen.  As you come onto the toll road to Culiacan there is the large Police facility on the right (daring robbers I say) and about 12-13 kms further along is an overpass with a sign indicating a road to the beaches Mazatlan North.  We have taken this road off the autopista into Mazatlan once and it has many small side roads so an easy place for the banditos to disappear to.  It is the toll road but not quite the toll road as the first toll booth is a another 15-20 kms further down.  In fact we slept there a few years ago when all the Mazatlan Pemex’s where full.  Never again.

I can’t see how this would be a problem heading towards Mazatlan as there are no Pemex stations or other facilities from which someone could warn a bandito friend…..unless they were hanging out at that toll booth.  Bottom line…..be vigilant and travel  with 1 or 2 others!

Amazing Aurora Borealis

I grew up in Edmonton where we often were treated to natures light show.   Now residing in B.C. we don’t get the chance to enjoy the spectacle.  CBC had an article about a live webcam that has been set up in Yellowknife.  This is the link to the article

and within the article is the link to  the AuroraMax website.

Technology has come a long way in the last fifty years.  What a treat!

Mazatlan road travel update!!

This was just emailed to me by a fellow Rver.  He has forwarded this not to create fear but rather to create awareness.  I have removed all  personal email information with the exception of the  Mexican from Mazatlan.

Hey Leland, nice picture of you.  You may remember taking us and our two friends N*** and D**  to the Tiara Sands. last February.  How have you been  doing?  Did you have your fishing  tournament?

We have purchased a 5th wheel RV and will be returning to Mexico this winter.  We will be crossing the border and heading to the Puerto Vallarta area.  Later on this winter we want to come back to Maz and stay the rest of the winter.  We love Mazatlan.  Maybe we will see you.

Just curious, have you heard of any safety issues with touristas traveling the main highways?  There seems to be a lot of hype about it up here in the states.

Take Care,

Spokane

Mr M
I’m doing great here in Mazatlan abit humid but expected, Fishing Tournament my boat didn’t make out the gate first day. Unfortunately the only honest info i could give traveling to Mazatlan is be very careful of federal checkpoint and military check points. I was just hired by the Canadian Consulate to transport a vehicle back to Edmonton AB, Mrs Ammoson was hi-jacked traveling on the Hwy a outbreak of gun fire where she was brazed by a bullet on her head and SUV windows were shot out, Mrs Ammoson is fine after what her and her father and mother witnessed such a horrific ordeal. Please be careful and if the check points do not have markings of federal or military do not stop.

If you want to check it out..

There is an RV Park about 42 KMs North of the Nogales border crossing, just off I19.  This park has WiFi, pull thrus and gated security.  A good last night stop in the USA if you are entering Mexico via Nogales.  I spoke with the owners over the weekend and they have not heard of any travel problems for RVers. In fact they say rv's are already crossing into Mexico, they had 2 go through yesterday.

Not sure if you all know Bill and Dorothy Bell, they are authors of several booklets on Mexico travel and have recently written an article on how secure they feel it is to travel in Mexico in these troubled times.

Safe travels everyone.
