A Colin Jewall special!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last evening, Colin took 10 shots with his Nikon D200 and merged them to create this one view in photoshop.

By the way for those from the West Coast of Canada, the Georgie & Tommie Silver award winners are in and as usual Colin has shot a good many of the winners.  The final gold statues (similar to the Oscars but for Best Home Architecture in the Okanagan & Vancouver) will be handed out in February 2011.  Colin has declined to attend, prefering to keep his toes warm in the south Pacific but is confident his clients will take home the GOLD as always.  Be sure to check out Colin Jewall Photo Studios Inc. by clicking on the link at the top right!

An evening on the town!

Last night was our big night in Mazatlan.  We had tickets to attend El Cascanueces!

But first we had to have our weekly bath, hair combed, change of underwear, etc. and voila we were transformed from beach bums to regular theatre going folks!

We were a group of ten and the process of getting from here to there involves climbing into a few vehicles and driving to the Embarcadero where we changed transport to water taxis.  Once we were on the other side of the channel we climbed into open air pulmonias which whisked us, literally – we had to hang on going around the corners – to Te Amo Lucy’s, the restaurant of choice for pre theatre dinner. Food was plentiful and served piping hot!  James really loved his rabbit mole despite all the tiny bones!  A one block walk to the Angela Peralta Theater where we joined the throngs attending the Nutcracker ballet! I bet you wondered what El Cascanueces meant!!  We were attending a performance put on by the Escuela Municipal De Ballet Clasico (the local ballet school).  In fact it was their 20th anniversary.  But first the theatre itself…a little information from a Mazatlan online cultural site.

This theater was built in the early 1870’s and named the Rubio Theater. In 1883 however, the famous opera singer Angela Peralta ‘The Nightingale of Mexico’ arrived in Mazatlan to perform. Upon her arrival, the crowd that gathered to meet her unhitched the horses from her carriage and carried her to her hotel. She was so taken back by their enthusiasm that she performed to her fans from the balcony of her hotel. Unfortunately, the boat she arrived on carried the yellow fever, and she died before she could ever perform in the theater. The theater was soon after renamed after her, and a plaque commemorates her tragic death.

Unfortunately, the theater also had tragedy awaiting it. In later years, the theater was turned into a movie theater, then a vaudeville stage, a boxing ring and eventually a parking garage! Finally, in 1975, a hurricane hit Mazatlán and destroyed the inside of the theater. Standing in ruin for years, the theater began a restoration in 1987, and re-opened in 1992.

Once you walk through the doors you are in an open air lobby.

The theatre has three balconies with two rows of seating.  The chairs are free standing so you can turn them to face the stage. We were seated in the orchestra near the back of the theatre. It seems that almost every seat has a great view of the stage.  The lights along the balconies are strung just for the Christmas season. The ballet itself was delightful!

After the performance we strolled past the Plazuela Machado where we spied a few tables of fellow rvers.  They were dining post baseball game.  The Venados won the game!  Such a variety of activities to partake in in you so chose.  I can see how those who live here in condos all winter do become a part of Mazatlan.

Though it would have been nice to linger for a drink the group elected to return to the Isla.  A ‘red truck” was hired to transport the group as it could carry us all with room to spare.  A simple truck with a roof and  cushioned plank type of seat along each side.

I rode with the driver!

Then once again down to the water taxi, a bit more tricky as it was dark out and much care had to be taken getting in & out of the boat.  A smooth ride across to the Isla, a beautiful quarter moon and the many fireworks going off in honor of the Virgin de Guadalupe, celebrated today the 12th.  A perfect end to a special night on the town.

Red Snapper Fish Roe Farm

Some enterprising family here on the Isla has started a new venture.  They came up with the idea of raising fish from eggs.  Hopefully I have the details correct, if not I apologize, but this is the story as told to me.  The red snapper eggs are harvested  from live fish who are not harmed in the process and are then set free.  This link gives a good idea of the process, http://www.lsu.edu/seagrantfish/faqs/redsnapper/biology.htm.  This is a quote from the link, “Even a small red snapper will produce a seemingly respectable 30,000 eggs in a season while a large female might spawn an incredible 75 million or more eggs each season! And if it should survive to the known maximum of its longevity, a female could potentially spawn nearly 4 billion eggs in her lifetime.”

Once the eggs have been gathered they are kept in special nets around a pod out in the ocean.  Neither fish nor birds can get at the roe.  Once the eggs have grown to the fry stage (baby fish size) they are then sold to fish farms.  I think this is a great idea.  A new way to bring income to the Isla.

In this first photo the nets are being prepared.

Now the tricky process of getting the nets out to the pod.

Amazing how the net sits over the boat.  Finally attachment to the rest of the pod.

Two things amaze me.  The first being the ingenious idea of using what is already around you to create and income with little capital on your part.  I am amazed that once again all of this takes place from within view of my garden!!

What’s happening today In RV1?

Not much.  It’s cool  (73F) & foggy.  Are we back in Vancouver?  The sound of the fog horn sounds familiar!!

We started the day out with a raffle draw for a fund raiser.  The rvers here on the Isla get together at this time year  to collect toys, candy and pesos to put towards food hampers for the neediest in the community.  The winner of a gift basket were Cheryl & Tim from RV2 and Peggy, also from RV2 got the Christmas lights.  Lydia was the big winner here in RV1 of a lovely poinsettia.  All the items were donated.  The draw was made by Israel, one of our veggie men.

Caeli decided to cover herself up and sleep the day away….

While Colin decided it was a good day to put up our outdoor xmas lights and to get started on the indoor lights.

The neighbors decided to plant a palm!

Just in case you are still not tired of the endless sunset  shots, here is a beauty taken last night.  Not sure if we will even get one tonight.

Dear Chris,

A reader of my blog, someone I don’t know, do not have any idea where they live, nor even if they are male or female, wrote me a comment the other day.

“I love your blog! We will be flying to Mazatlan on the 12th and I can’t wait. The pictures and stories are wonderful!”

Dear Chris,

We hope your trip to Mazatlan will be everything you hope it to be.  I’m sure you have already done a good deal of research as to what you want to see.  Don’t forget to check out the Plazuela Machado, especially at night where the square comes alive with thousands of tiny white lights.  Be sure to stop at one of the restaurants there for at least a cerveza or a margarita.  This is near the Centro Historico, Old Town where there is so much to see.

From here if you walk west towards the water you will come to Olas Altas which was Mazatlan’s original tourist district.  In fact there is a free concert next Wednesday, the 15th, a celebration of Mexican music by the Sinfonia Mexicana, at 7:30PM.  I’m sure you know all about the Golden Zone which hosts a multitude of restaurants & shopping experiences.  The Mercado at Centro (Central Market)….

is a must as well as the Cathedral and the Plaza Revolution.  So much to see & do.  What else, oh yes take a stroll along the Malecon or better yet take a ride in a pulmonia!

If you have any extra time Chris take a water taxi…

over to the Isla de la Piedra and enjoy the beach.  Stop for lunch, buy something from one of the beach vendors and just simply enjoy!  You are always welcome to drop by and say hello to us at the Tres Amigos RV Park.  Just ask for Contessa.

Buen Viaje,

the 5C’s
