Carnaval 2012

Mazatlan is working round the clock to get this event off the ground.

We were in town on Monday and saw many changes including banners and lights strung along the malecon.

For the 114th Carnaval 2012, the theme is The Party of the Empires/La Fiesta de los Imperios. France represents the Child Queen, Russia the Queen of Floral Games, Rome the King of Happiness, and China, the Queen of Carnaval.

All along the malecon, giant paper mache statues, called monigotes have been erected.

I went into town today for a luncheon meeting and walked the malecon from Hacienda Hotel to Sixto Osuna, a very long walk. This photo shows the size of these statues as compared to the man on the right.

Along the way I saw several homes that line the parade route. What a perfect way to catch the parade, on your own balcony.

Having your own bano makes the parade viewing much easier!!! There are signs everywhere offering the use of a bathroom for a certain price. This place puts a great value on bano use while selling cerveza at a good price.

This group of locals are simply camping out in an empty field. It rained yesterday, note the dark sky. Must have been a horrid night for them all.

Many of the main roads are blocked off at night allowing the streets to fill with partiers. Most of the streets are strung with lights and the giant paper mache statues are lit up.

There will be music everywhere, today all was being set up.

The streets were chaos......impassable in some areas.

Corona and Pacifico truck were everywhere you looked. Beer stands are everywhere. Hard to believe that all that beer is going to be drunk in just a very few days.....

This sculpture has been made for the Palzuela Machado gardens. I didn't check what it was made of but it is so perfect sitting there.

Let the Carnaval begin………..enjoy!

Dia del Amor y la Amistad

I know that the last two posts have been about Valentine’s Day but I came across this information late yesterday while I was researching the words printed on our complimentary photo we received after our special V – Day dinner.

A special photo, unexpected gift from Tio Juan Restaurant.

I had never seen that expression “Dia del Amor y la Amistad” and was about to research it when I  received  an email from Jaltemba Sol that explained the phrase.  I find it very special that this country recognizes February 14th as a special day to honour friends.  Wonderful concept!

Valentine’s Day in Mexico:
February 14th is celebrated in Mexico as the Día de San Valentin, but it’s more commonly referred to as El Día del Amor y la Amistad, the “day of love and friendship.” People commonly give flowers, candies and balloons to their romantic partners, but it’s also a day to show appreciation for friends.
Celebrating Friendship:
Everyone can take part in Mexican Valentine’s Day celebrations, because it’s not just for lovers, it’s also for friends. It’s a time for people to show appreciation to the people they care about – this way, there’s no reason to feel left out if you don’t have a significant other. Buy some flowers, write a poem or make a gift for one of your friends – let them know you care!
Say “I love you” in Spanish:
If you think Spanish is a romantic language, you’re right! If you’d like to tell your special someone how you feel about them in Spanish, you may find it a bit more challenging than just learning the words. Saying I love you in Spanish can be a bit more complicated than in English because there are two different ways to say it. “Te quiero” is said freely among friends and family members but “te amo” is used to denote a stronger feeling.
I promise to move on from this to Carnaval 2012…..stay tuned!

Twas a perfect Valentine’s Day

We had so much fun yesterday.  The day should have just kept going and going.   I did not get a box of chocolates but…..

...I might have loved to get this box of weiner pups.

After our long long beach walk I did get a special gift!

A gift from the ocean and from mi amore! Lucky me....

After a 90 minute massage we just hung around and enjoyed our afternoon together.

....that was followed by a spectacular sunset on this special day.

We then had a choice to make.  Stone Island now has two restaurants open in the evening and we had to make a choice  of where to have dinner.  Most of the RVers chose to go to the Maria Coral Hotel but being the contrary couple that we are, we went to Tio Juan’s Restaurant at the other end of the beach.  The Maria Coral was offering a choice of 2 entrees with a glass of vino for 240 pesos while Tio Juan was offering a meal plus unlimited pina coladas, margaritas and cervezas for 200 pesos as well as live music.  Only 3 couples from the RV park went there and all the rest were locals.  It was a blast.

Meet Hugo! He lives in Mazatlan with a wife and daughter and works on the Isla. He lived in Canada ( Victoria ) for many years and had a Quebecois girlfriend whom I think he still loves. Hugo has the perfect French accent and speaks better French than most people I know, me included. In fact he is fluent in 8 languages, and was able to tell us " I love you" in Russian, Italian, German, Dutch, Arabic, French, English, and of course Spanish. He is currently studying Japanese in the hopes of working as an interpreter at a yet to be built Nissan plant in Aguacaliente. He spent the evening going from table to table making sure that everyone was happy. We had more food than we could eat and of course non stop drinks. Bottles of good wine were also available for 100 pesos. Our coconut shrimp were to die for but I just couldn't eat it all.

What to do but dance it all off...

There is no way I cold keep up with these girls in those shoes...

The band was great, they played what I call hug & holds and rumbas for the the romantics in the crowd, some salsa, samba, mambo and merengue and we even got to dance a chacha.

Hugo was a delight to dance with but...

...I reserved most of my dances for my sweetie. Notice my practical dancing shoes. We pulled ourselves away about 10:45PM...although I could have danced all night!!! We checked out the Maria Coral Hotel on the way home and found it pitch dark. That party must have ended very very early. Last I heard the party we were at was still going strong at 1 AM!!

...and so ended a perfect Valentine's Day on Isla de la Piedra.

WOW....this 5 X 7 glossy photo, was just delivered to our door, compliments of the Tio Juan Restaurant! Life is good here in Mexico.

Aliens…..

….well not so sure but a yelp for help!

What the.....heck?????

In yesterdays post, I mentioned that life is a choice.....

...our neighbour, Avy, has given us the use of his ATV in exchange for providing he and Judy with TV all winter. We never used our privilege until Sunday, the perfect day.

We had a blast and you can be sure we will be using that ATV again and again….or else I will pull that TV plug  😀 !!

That is until we saw the aliens…….

Maybe they only invade the far south end of the beach!

Too scary for me.....time to head home....................

Adios amigos.........
