Invasion ~ part 2

Actually now it is becoming much more fun than a seeming invasion.  Actually I had a blast at the mountain climb on Sunday, Colin had to pull me away.  Many of the vehicles left on Sunday afternoon but there were several who lingered till sunset Monday, the end of the long weekend.

This was the scene.....magnificent, eh!!

...and there I sat, just to the far right of the bleachers.....and where was mi amore you ask....pretty much wherever the action was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Que pasa????

...they are climbing the mountain....how fun!

They just kept trying and trying and trying, sorta like the Energizer Rabbit!!

..who knew....

This one really really needs to get some different shoes 🙁

Is this for real?

While all this NOISE and gyrating were happening here on Chivos the rest of the Isla reposed in sunny relaxation. Tres Amigos is to the left ( where we are ) and to the right of the tall white building 1/3 from the right. Very very peaceful. There is a rumour around that the cleared foreground will become Tres Amigos 3!!!

Does he really think he can get over that boulder?

Whew!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doesn't he look like he is having FUN!!!!!!

OMG!!! How did that rock get there......stuck!

Hmmmmm..............

Does this look good or ????

Is it possible? Yup! Looks like #88 stopped by the mountain.........

The action was non stop, there were many vehicles trying to climb at the same time. It was determind that the 2 in the foreground were stuck and both had to be winched out so that others might take their turn at machine over mountain. The blue truck in the background were doing the run with a load of friends in the back end.

Back to #88....he is for sure totally done!

Out of control...wild energy!!!!

Even the ladies had their turn to climb. By the way I did take this shot....Colin did the others.

Who is that guy in the coral shirt and pith helmet.....Colin of course. He just has to be in the middle of the action. Guess I took this shot also.

Thanks for sticking with me so long……this must be the longest blog ever but I just had to give you the feel for being a part of the invasion!!!!  Did you have a good time?  We sure did.  Culiacan last weekend and now this.  Who wants to head North? I LOVE my life!

Invasion of Isla de la Piedra

It all began when we had friends over for happy hour Saturday…

Carol and Gary didn't get to the Isla until mid February this year for a varity of reasons so this was only our first visit. They drive all the way from Maine, USA along with Gypsy and their very energetic puppy Freida who who couldn't stay still for the photo. Unfortunately Caeli does not get along with Freida and was locked up in the RV.

In the midst of that visit along comes Eric, all the way from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is an RV technician who winters in Mazatlan and does work on the side while here. We needed his expertise on a consistant propane smell coming from our stove. Eric couldn't find the cause nor could he keep his eyes off the beginning of the invasion! Colin was more interested in tuning the red guitar for Eric.

We knew that they were coming, the big tents had been set up on the beach earlier in the day.  In typical Mexican fashion no one knew any details other than it was going to be an event.

...big trucks, little trucks, 4 X 4's, ATV's, anything and everything on wheels!

What we didn't know was how many were coming. It seemed that for hours and hours they just kept coming. We could see their headlights all the way down the ten miles of beach towards Estrella. Soon the beach was alive with the sound of roaring motors, enough to drown out the sound of the surf. Nothing to do but pour a drink and watch.

The festivities seemed to be centered down the beach in front of the Molokay Restaurant.

Sunday morning we walked down to check things out.....this fellow must have partied all night.

It was a beehive of activity.

Some brought tents and camped on the beach. I understand that the two hotels on the Isla were booked solid.

While others were easing into the morning this fellow was having a blast.

So what was this all about....it seems that several clubs from across Mexico where having a fun weekend and the Isla was the final destination. We had some vehicles parked beside us here at Tres Amigos from Zacatecas, a 20 hour drive. They had at least 8 vehicles with trailers for some. Others came from La Paz, Torreon, Guadalajara and other parts of Mexico.

My understanding is that the Pata Salada group from Mazatlan were sponsoring the event which started Friday afternoon. During the day Saturday they raced up and down the river near Villa Union before heading to the Isla.

Word on the beach was that there would be some racing...that did not happen. Seems the plan was to climb a mountain.

This little buggy would set you back $20,000.00USD!!!! She was driving it, it was hers! See the small mountain in the top left, above the hood of the jeep, that is where the fun took place Sunday from noon on.....

That's Mazatlan in the background....more photos tomorrow.

Mazatlan & Cruise Ships!!

They are back!

Well they are returning very very moderately.   Alonso Gárate Manjarrez, Manager of Tropical Tours announced on March 10th, that the Zaandam, a Holland America cruise ship  will make 10 stops here in Mazatlan between November 2012 and April 2013.  Colin and I have sailed on the Zaandam a few times, it has great dance floors:)  Ten stops is not much but it is a start and once one company returns, hopefully so will the rest.

We did have a cruise ship arrival on December 15th but as you can see it was towed in. In fact it is still here under repair.

Ocean Star Pacific was disabled in April 2011 due to a generator fire and was refitted in Salinas Cruz. The ship then began this itinerary, it did stop in Mazatlan on July 25/11. The ship developed further problems with A/C and heating and was towed here for repairs where it still sits. What will be it's fate?

Have a good one……

Quick trip into town!

While Colin had his massage Tuesday I decided at the last minute ( that means with 10 minutes notice ) and for those who know me, well that is news in itself to go with him.  I shopped in Centro while he massaged:)  Managed to pick up a bunch of stuff I could just not live without till we return in November.

By the time we met I had not stopped for over 2 hours and we had just done the huge beach walk before leaving the Isla.  I was hungry and even too hungry to walk to the Plazuela Machado for my usual.

So we stopped at Tony's for a camarone burger. Cost 45 pesos or $2.70USD. That has to be the best burger I have ever had in my life......100gm of huge shrimp grilled with chihuahua cheese, avocado sauce etc, etc....the expression 'to die for' doesn't even cover it. Tony, the owner and chef said that if we did not like it we did not have to pay!! Once he found out we were from Isla de la Piedra he started asking if we knew so and so.....Gord, this photo is for you!!

The young woman who took this photo was seated around the corner at Tony’s counter in the Mercardo.  Her and her parents had just sailed from here from Ecuador and are currently docked at the El Cid Marina.  They like Mazatlan and have decided to buy a home in the city.  You just never know who you will meet nor where.  We had a fun visit along with a wonderful lunch.

Seems like most of the shrimp boats are being docked till next season.

Homeward bound to the Isla and the girls!
