RV Repairs in Mazatlan

Eventually an RV needs a repair of some sort.  Most RVers do annual maintenance that goes a very long way in keeping your unit in great shape.  However the unforeseen always happens.  When the unexpected happens in Mexico it can be a huge problem.  Personally over the years while travelling in Mexico we have had to deal with a non functioning A/C unit, a hydraulic slide that would not come in, total corrosion of our house batteries that almost resulted in a fire, a fire in the generator and our toad breaking away from the RV itself not to mention a multitude of small issues.  All of our problems have eventually been resolved somewhere in Mexico.

Here in Mazatlan we are extremely fortunate to have a resident RV tech.  Erik Kaasgaard lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the summer months where he works as an RV Service Tech and during the winter months he lives here in Mazatlan where he services all of us snowbirds.  The best of both worlds for all of us.  Erik can be reached at 669 269 6979 in Mazatlan or by email at Erik/ rv repair Maz <freemanerik99@gmail.com>.  He has been beyond busy this winter as many RVers have been saving their regular maintenance for Erik to do.  This winter he has has added boat maintenance to his list.

Two years ago we had a major problem with one of our front jacks not lifting unless we helped it with a shovel.  On the way down here that year the jack would sometimes start to descend.  It was a situation that needed to be addressed before heading North and Erik did a great repair job.  This year we had a few small items that cropped up and once we got Erik here the list grew.  He is a wizard at finding the problem and most specifically the cause of the problem and then resolving the issue.  His task is even more difficult as parts are not plentiful here in Mexico.

We first called Erik ( at the fan ) and his new helper Dal in to check out our bedroom Fantastic fan. It would only pull air in from the outside when we really wanted to expel the hot air from the inside to the outside. It took him some time but it turns out that the fan had never been installed properly in the first place.  It works great now.

As it happens our electric hot water heater went out the same day that Erik arrived. We were ready to install a new one but he simply hit the reset switch and it works just fine. You might notice that it is dark outside. He started his day at 9AM and did not get to us until after 6PM and worked for a few hours. He then had to drive “the road” back to Mazatlan.

I have been complaining about our freezer for several years now. It freezes up in one area and forms heavy blobs of ice that slowly gets bigger and bigger.  It doesn’t matter how much the fridge is defrosted, this clear ice keeps forming.

I thought we needed a new seal for the door but Erick being the detective that he is was able to determine that the door was just not closing tight in one area.

I have had this problem looked at by other RV techs to no avail.  At least Erick found the problem and created an easy fix.  He simply put something behind the seal to make it puff out more so it closed more efficiently.  It worked and when Erik returned four days later there was only one tiny speck of ice.  Well he added a bit of silicone here and there and the freezer is now perfect.

So then we decided to have him look at our water pump.  The trickle of water has been slow for a few years now.  Colin had it into an RV repair shop last year and they said the water pressure was low as the pump was far from the tap!!!???!!!!  We also had a mobile RV tech look at it in Kelowna a few months ago.  We actually have a spare water pump with us, as that is something one needs while travelling and boon docking as we do in the USA.  We asked Erik if he would install the new pump.  Instead he found that our water pump was set at the lowest setting possible.  That likely happened over the past few years due to vibration.  He simply reset it to high and we have great water pressure once again.  Why did no one else find that problem years ago?  Such an easy repair.

Seeing as Erik was doing so well Colin challenged him with a problem we have had from day one with this coach. We had a leak in our basement and have spent a huge amount of money doing repairs over the years only to have the leak reoccur.

Our wheels kick up water when we drive through rain and of course we always have rain coming and going from Canada and eventually our basement gets wet, in particular this one basement compartment.  Erik looked and looked and found the source of the leak.  It was how the coach had been built in the first place and he knew how to repair the problem.  So he came back for a third time and applied fiberglass to the problem area.  It will never leak again.  In the past we had special undercoating placed under the RV and it still leaked not to mention all the other sealants that had been used.

Thank goodness for Erik and his attention to detail.  We wish him many more years of travelling of Mexico and helping us all out.  His rates are 400 pesos per hour, and he is worth more than double that amount.  We might just have one more challenge for him.  Again over the years no one else has been able to do the repair but we have confidence in Eric.  It involves our awning but as we are under our palapa we can’t do anything until we pull out of our site.  Perhaps in April just before we leave the Isla.

Que Pasa

It has been a quieter few days, other than my usual Monday massage and another visit to the chiropractor we have been taking things slower.

Loved all your comments about our intruder.

We had another two park bonfire event last Tuesday.

We were all celebrating more birthdays, this time for these two guys, Robbin and Mike.

The music was provided by local Isla talent, a mix or Rvers and house renters.

When they started in on one of my favorites..."Under the Boardwalk" made popular by the Drifters...I just had to start being a backup singer and dancer.

Has us another fabulous sunset last Monday.

The sun is telling us that our days here are numbered.

As it sets further west we know we shall soon be heading west.

The colors are so vibrant.

That’s it for today.  I hope that you are enjoying yourself wherever you are.

Uninvited Intruder

Let me set the scene.  We were sitting next door at Val and John’s.  The girls really wanted to come over and Carmeh tried so hard.  First she tried to climb the fence and then she tried to bite through the plastic.  She looked so cute, she was just a few feet away but oh so determined to join us.  I wished I had my camera to take a photo.  Five minutes later she manouevered around the gate and half jumped onto our stairs down to the sand and up John’s stairs.  She was so proud of herself.  Of course I got up to let Caeli out of our yard and join us.

A few minutes later the large group of 30 horses came galloping down to the beach from the road beside our site.  We have only ever seen this group come up off the beach and at a nice slow pace.  Again I wished I had my camera.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw a movement.  I shouted for John to get his camera.  We had an uninvited intruder.

The girls were barking like mad and I was just not sure what to do. John got his camera but somehow his shutter never opened fully but you still get the idea of the chaos.

We had no idea what to do with this horse. He was big and heavy.

He didn't know where to go either. We were so worried that he would try and jump the wall into the sand and get hurt.

Colin finally got my camera but it was not functioning fast enough, maybe it was in shock like the rest of us. You can see me in the background, I was asking the horseman to come get his horse out of my yard. It was not the usual fellow but a young kid and he had no idea what to do.

There was the potential for damage.

...other than my plants being munched on.

Perhaps because the four of us were making so much noise the horse turned around to the back.

Suddenly the horse rushed out the yard breaking through our fence, now held together with duct tape.  There was no damage other then munched plants and lots of deep hoof prints and of course the broken metal fence.  I have  no idea how he got into the yard, maybe he stepped over the gate.  Obviously as the horses galloped down the road this one came through the RV entrance and right into our site.

It did take a while for my heart to stop pumping so fast.  Now where was our friend Hugh, the horseman, when we needed him?  Moral of the story, keep your camera with you at all times.

Lively Saturday

We left the Isla at 8:00AM.  Once again I was off to the dentista. I thought I would be there for an hour and she would be doing my crown prep.  Instead she only put in the post and wants to let it harden for a week to be certain it will be very strong.  She didn’t want any vibration around the post until the cement was set.  I have to say that this is the most careful and detailed dentist I have ever been to.

With extra time on our hands we took a walk and discovered yet another Pancho’s Restaurant north of the Golden Zone.

I honestly can't remember the last time we went out for breakfast. Obviously it is something we don't do very often.

It was all very tasty but way too much food for us so early in the morning.

We then caught a bus down to the Golden Zone where we did a we bit of shopping for some Mexican platters and bowls for our home in Kelowna.  It was so warm in the store that I never even thought to take a photo, I just wanted to get it done and get out of there.

This is one the Carnival statues I missed in my Feb. 11th post.

Since the day I took those first photos of the statues signs have been added to the base of each one. This one refers to the rhythm of the conga.

This one is easy to figure out. Look at those feet.

The full figure before the sign got added. Love those signs.

We were driving so fast that I almost missed this one of the scoundrel Che Guevara. Now I have a photo of all of them.

The panga back to the Isla was an event in itself, from babies to dogs and interesting faces.

After spending a bit of time with the girls who let us know that they were not pleased with having been left home alone yet again we tried to settle in for some reading and guitar time.  Instead we ended up having a visit with our neighbors and that was interrupted by a very rude guest.  More on that in my next post.  We had just settled down again for about ten minutes when we received much more welcome guests.

Carole and Gary lived in a home here on the Isla for over seven winters. Last year they moved from New Mexico to Maine making it much more difficult to drive here. So they flew in for an Isla vacation with plans to head to Mexico City and Palenque by bus next week.

Action on the beach, a drummer in the lead, was it a protest or a parade or ?

The first flag reads CEFA which means Centre for Fiscal Studies.  The second flag represents the Amigos del Ejercito, a military sports institution created to encourage children and youth, sports and patriotism, avoiding vices that degrade the Mexican country through military discipline.  Friends of the Army is a group that pays homage to Mexican youth through the Mexican Army.  You can read about it here.

They were a rather impressive site. It looked like they had some camping gear and were likely going to be spending the night on the beach.

Meanwhile we were supposed to be heading up the beach for a farewell dinner for Lynne of Winnie Views.  We had already had a Tres Amigos farewell happy hour a few days ago but a few of us also wanted to do a special dinner.  So we quickly bid Carole and Gary adieu and moved onto the next event.  As I have mentioned before, one needs to be at a restaurant by 4:30PM here on the Isla unless previous arrangements had been made.  As it turns out we didn’t even leave until 5PM.

Fortunately Carmelita's remained open for us and as it turned out three others tables of dinners appeared. Maybe they will stay open later more often.

I was very sad saying goodbye to Lynne this morning. So glad that after back and forth blogging over the years we got to meet here in paradise. You will always be in my heart my friend.

Adios amiga and safe travels. We all look forward to following the rest of your Mexican adventures on your blog.

Now that was a very busy Saturday and you haven’t even met the rude visitor yet!

What did you do yesterday?

Did you do anything to celebrate Valentines Day?  Did you just stay home and nest?  Did you treat yourself to something special?

Colin and I had no real plans for the day other than to open that bottle of champagne left over from the Tommie Awards.  Here we are later into the next day and that bottle still has not been opened.  The day took on it’s own plan.

I walk through my garden every morning to discover what has changed. The morning of the 14th I realized that for the first time all winter I only had one hibiscus bloom.

A boat came in with a red hull. Very pretty, but it was only there for 24 hours.

We decided to go to Letys for BBQ dorado only to find a wedding reception in progress.

We were happy for the bride and groom ( and did not intrude with a tourist photo of them both ). However we were unable to dine there.

So we moved further up the beach where they were about to close but graciously accommodated us.

We had a great Valentines dinner on the beach.

Saw this disgarded heart on the beach as we wandered home.

Then this red tractor passed us by. Seems like my camera seemed to capture the red, pink and love of the day.

So what did you do to celebrate the day yesterday?
