ANOTHER ATTACK

A few nights ago on Tuesday evening we were swarmed by hundreds of thousands of termites.  Having done some research after the crisis I think they were drywood termites.

This is a Goggle image screen capture. The carcases we found outside and on the roof the next day looked like these.

What came inside were only the bodies. The wings were left outside, likely falling off as these critters crawled in.

It was just getting dark, Colin was getting out of  the shower and I was preparing dinner when we both started feeling things all over our body.  Not just one or two but 30 or 50 crawling insects. We started swatting at them.  They would not stop coming.  The screen door was closed but they kept coming and coming and dropping on our heads and backs.  We looked up, they were pouring in from the ceiling vents, they were crawling through the tiniest of areas.  How were they getting in?  We finally got smart and closed the vents and the windows and turned on the A/C.  They kept falling from the ceiling.  They were everywhere, on us, on the counters, on the floor, on the bed, crawling on the carpet, even in the dogs water dish.

There are none in this shot but they were falling into the shower through this surround shroud that does not leak so how were they getting in? Here you can see liquid drops along the edge, Colin had sprayed with insecticide.

During the heat of the battle we never stopped to take photos.  Our mission was to kill these things.  We had no idea how they got into the RV but had visions of them having infested the ceiling.  It was like a horror movie seeing hundreds of termites crawling out of this area of the shower.

In this photo, after being sprayed you can see just the one termite crawling out. You just have to imagine seeing that area full of dark squirming insects., that would then drop down into the RV.

We spent 6 hours hunting and killing these pests. We used paper towels to kill them and pick them up. After the first hour when it seemed it would never stop Colin got some insecticide which we sprayed around all of ceiling vents and any possible opening. The CedarCide did nothing so we had to use the heavy duty stuff. That merely slowed them down. They just kept coming.

This is a small area of our Queen bed. There were hundreds of them just on the bed.

Colin would vacuum them up while I dealt with the ones in the kitchen and the ones that got into our dishes cabinet. They just kept coming back.

We had been fighting them for 5 hours, we had not had dinner and I was exhausted. Colin found me sitting here, I had fallen asleep sitting up. I guess I had sat down for a moment, you can see I still had my killing cloth in hand.

I think he took my glasses off an eased me down. After a 30 minute nap, I completed our dinner and we ate at midnite.

I think I went to bed about 1:30AM and Colin says he stayed up until 3:00AM patrolling and killing.  It was worse than a horror movie.  We were literally invaded by hundreds if not thousands of insects.  Colin estimates that we killed at least two thousand of them.  The next morning, the clean up continued, outside everything was covered with mostly dead bodies but many were still wriggling.  Inside we had just a few crawling around.  We continued to spray all morning.  Termites like water and they were in the sink, under the kitchen dish cloth and swimming in the dogs water bowl.  In wasn’t until late Wednesday that they stopped dropping from the RV ceiling.

We found out that these swarms just happen from time to time and the locals simply accept it.  They sit in the dark and wait for the swarm to pass. When we were hit we had several lights on inside.  There is also a larger very bright security light at the front of our yard and that is likely what brought the swarm our way.  We were told that this usually happens for three nights in a row.  At this point we were concerned that these pests were in the walls of our RV which are steel and foam but would keep coming out and start to eat our wood cabinets.  We called an exterminator at home who told us that we would be alright as long as we got the RV fumigated within a month.

Most of the RV’s have left and there are three empty spaces between us and the next RV.  They only got a few bugs but they normally sit inside in the dark.  The next RV had about 50 insects come in and the last RV had none but he had sprayed chemicals for ants a few hours earlier so that might have deterred them.  Our night watchman had his home swarmed in the Colonia that night but our day worker Ishmael had none.  Speaking to friends the next day in Mazatlan they mentioned they had seen termites swarming one restaurant on Olas Altas yet leaving the others alone.  A week ago we had friends over for happy hour ( it was on March 18th ) and we were swarmed by a small batch of termites sitting by the fire pit. They had been attracted by the bright security light and the fire which we soon shut off.  We wondered if our invasion on March 25th, exactly a week later had anything to do with this enormous attack.

The morning after the attack we had Ismael clean the RV roof as it was covered with dead bodies.

Colin also removed the Fantastic Fan covers to check how many insects were trapped under the shrouds.  We wanted to clean the area so that we would be prepared for  the second night invasion which never happened.  However last night, the third night, we had about 50 winged termites flying around but only one got inside the RV.  We sure hope that this is the end of the story.

Dead mouse and Murphy’s Law

Did I not just post yesterday that we have not had a mouse or rat this season?

We had a wee odor and during the day yesterday the odor became overbearing.  Then we saw a mouse turd on the bed.  Then a light bulb went on in Colin’s mind.  He stared a search and in the bedroom behind a drawer we found it.

So glad that our RV is constructed the way it is, we were easily able to find the source of the smell

Good catch Colin?  But if that mouse is dead, who pooped on the bed?

Note to self….set out a dozen traps.

Sigh!!!!!!!!!!!  What next?

Wine, anyone?

Yet another trip to the Vet and some distressing news

First off I want to let you know that Carmeh’s toe is back to normal.

This recent trip to the vet goes back to early February when we took Caeli to the vet where we were told she had parasites.  There were 2 visits to the vet in February for this problem.  About ten days ago we again saw blood and what looked like little worms on the bed sheets. We gathered a few samples and this time we went to a different vet,  Dr. Marco Antonio Cardenas, used by many gringos here in Mazatlan.   We still like our first vet, Dr. Rafael but felt we needed a second opinion.

Veterinaria Del Pacifico is at #1034 Rio Baluarte; 669 982 6727

Within a few minutes Dr. Marco diagnosed fleas!  Our girls had fleas!  How could they?  They are on all the usual preventative medications.  Sure enough he showed us that the black worm like bits we found in the bed were actually flea excrement, a simple test done with a paper towel and warm water.  Then he showed us a flea on Caeli near her rectum.  We were in shock.  Dr. Rafael never did examine Caeli and just looked under the microscope at the black worm like bits and announced that she had worms.  We were shocked at that time also, as the girls are on the usual worm preventative medications given monthly.  However as the black worm like bits kept appearing, now almost 6 weeks later, we knew there as something wrong and hence the visit to Dr. Marco.

Dr. Marco explained that fleas are very prevalent in this climate.  They are carried on dogs which roam all over the beach, on cats of which we have many feral cats here in the RV Park and on rats.  Well we have had mice in the past and one rat but nothing this season.  He gives his own dog a flea bath weekly to keep his dog flea free even thought it is on Frontline Plus.  Fleas are a part of life here and he is surprised that we have been problem free.  Perhaps we have this issue because we have had a warmer than usual winter.  Regardless we have a problem, a huge problem.  He was very surprised that neither myself nor Colin have been bitten by fleas especially as the girls sleep with us and share the sofa with us.

What to do?  Flea baths for the girls, medication and please rip out your RV carpets and fumigate your home!  Right!

Carmeh is the first to get bathed and we had to muzzle her as she hates strangers handling her. Normally we are not allowed to be behind the scenes but they did make an exception for for us. I know she thought that she was being tortured.

Caeli was next. They only found one flea on each girl.

They were then towel dried.

Then they had to sit in the sun to dry. Carmeh was begging me to let her out. Once dry, they were supposed to be combed but their hair is so dense that the tech gave up.

A part of the bath was an anal gland squeeze and an ear cleaning. Here Dr. Marco is looking at what was found in Caeli's ear.

In just the one ear she has a very large yeast infection, called Malassezia Dematitis. Dr. Marco was surprised at how severe the infection was and that she had not been complaining. So she is now being treated 4 times per days with 2 types of medication placed in her ear canals by me for the next two weeks.

Dr. Marco indicated that this ear infection could have been caused by fleas.  He is very thorough and also is putting the girls on 2 doses of Droncit over the next three weeks.  This medication is a cleanse for tapeworms which can be caused by fleas.  Doncit is not available in Mexico and he relies on clients to bring it here for him through their vets.  We use K9 Advantix 11 for flea protection but he prefers Frontline Plus which we are to use for the next six months and then we can switch back to the K9 Advantix.

Dr. Marco spent 90 minutes with us. The girls each got a flea bath. In addition we purchased one dose each of Frontline ( I am buying the rest online for less money ), the two ear medications for Caeli and the 4 doses of Droncit. Total cost 1670 pesos ($145.00CAD/$127.00USD)! We are so happy we found and met Dr. Marco. However his parting comment to us was " this is like giving you an aspirin for a brain tumour" !!!!!!!!!!

We were shell shocked as in stunned disbelief.  As Dr. Marco explained to us, flea larvae can live forever even through an atomic blast.  Wonderful 🙁  Our house on wheels may just be infested with these larvae  😥  There is no way we can just rip out and throw away the carpets in the RV as he suggested.  Plus we also have cloth seats and valances, etc.  We could not get the RV fumigated on the Isla plus we are living in it. What to do?

The panga back to the Isla was so full that we could not even sit together and work out a strategy.

The girls were exhausted, all three of them.

Once home we spent the next few hours cleaning.  First a deep vacuum of everything in the RV.  Then I sprayed CedarCide, a natural organic  bug control product that I use on me to keep the mosquitoes and noseeums off of me,  all over the bed mattress, the valances, the carpet, the dog beds and blankets that cover the sofa, the chairs the dogs use, just every surface I could see.  I don’t know if it will kill the larvae but it does kill live fleas on contact.  We saw nothing jumping around.  I then put on white socks and walked all over checking for flea excrement and found nothing.  Then we went outside and vacuumed and sprayed some more and shook everything out plus put some things in sealed bags to deal with when we got back to Canada.  A few hours later we re vacuumed the inside of the RV.  So for the past seven days we have been vacuuming and shaking things and just checking things as best we can.  We have very little CedarCide  left and are keeping it for an emergency.  But frankly what could be a worse emergency?

We honestly don’t think that we have a nest of flea larvae in our home.  It could be anywhere and we believe it is somewhere outside and possibly not even in our yard.  Remember, only one live flea was found on each of the girls and neither myself nor Colin have received any flea bites.  We did find one dead adult flea in the bed this morning.  We will get the RV fumigated when we get back home in Canada.  Meanwhile we just keep cleaning, shaking things out and vacuuming over and over.  The last thing we want is and infestation.

Now you know why I missed 3 days of blog posts last week.  We were beyond stressed plus simply exhausted.

Carmeh was so worn out when we got back from seeing Dr. Marco, poor thing.

Caeli wasn't even interested in her food, she was exhausted.

Ocean Tragedy

We were saddened to come upon this dolphin on our beach walk yesterday morning.

This dolphin must have recently washed up. Sadly it's tail had a piece of rope wrapped around it. Worse it's mouth was wrapped in the same yellow rope.

Could it no longer swim?

Could it no longer breathe?

Could it no longer eat?

Such a beautiful animal to be destroyed by something man put into the ocean.

What one wakes up to and how the day goes..

The past two mornings we have woken to dense fog.  You could not see the sailboats in the water, in fact you couldn’t even see the water.  When we went for our morning walk we had to keep checking that the girls were close to us as we could easily have lost them in the fog.  By the time we got back to the RV our faces were wet as was my hair.  By 10:00 AM we were back to sunny skies.

Right along the edge of the ocean these young vultures were breakfasting on the remains of a pelican.

Their father was sitting high up in the corner of our yard making sure his flock remained safe. You can see the waves crashing but not much else.

It was hard to get a good shot because of the heavy fog. The tip of his nose was white, then red on the beak with all the rest black.

Just before 6:00AM this morning this group of campers decided to move on. I saw five of them come out of that tiny tent. I assume that the other four slept on the sand.

They were very good about picking up all of their litter and they did make sure that the fire was doused.  Interestingly it was the three girls who took down the tent, packed up and picked up and carried everything away.  The boys did not help nor carry anything at all.  Hopefully they found a place open that early for breakfast.

Self portrait! Colin went to see Dr. Paty the other day to have to a tiny filling done.

He took a pulmonia from the embarcadero, 90 pesos!  It was just 80 for the past few weeks when I was going back and forth.  The pulmonia driver waited for Colin to be done with the dentist.  He claimed that business is slowing right down and he would rather wait an hour to get the return fare. When business is slow, Mexicans tend to raise their prices. Colin’s driver said that on average he clears 170 pesos per day after paying for the pulmonia cost and fuel.  Yikes, I just added up our pulmonia costs and I’m sure there are some I never noted in my book.  3755 pesos, roughly $320.00CAD.  That is an expense that needs be added to your budget if visiting the Isla.  We did have many trips to dentists and vets this year.  My budget was 3500 pesos  and we still have just over two weeks to go but overall it is not too bad.  You do have to remember that we never drive the car off the Isla, other than Colin’s trip to Culiacan for the guitar festival.  We used one tank of gas for 5 months with no wear or tear on the car.  I think that most here will have spent close to $180.00 for fuel plus paid for pulmonias for their evening trips into town.

Had a visit from friends who live a few blocks away. Usually we are all so busy doing whatever we do that we only have time for brief chats here and there. It was nice to spend some quality time with Carla & Diego and their three year daughter Cielo.

Cielo did not want to leave the dogs. Sadly the family is on their way back to Canada, near Winnipeg where they have an event venue. They have 50 weddings booked for this summer. They can be found at Ceilos gardens.com, we look forward to seeing them in November.

So ends another few days. Where does the time go? Unlike the sun it does not return the next morning. Use your precious time wisely.
