A walk in the park with a tad of danger

Yesterday ( Wednesday ) morning due to high tide we did our first walk of the day in the botanical gardens just behind the RV Park.  The park has been under development for a few years now and this was our first walk this season.  A lot has been accomplished since we were last here the end of March.

This is the entrance to the garden but actually this is the view when you exit. That is the RV park you see in the background. It is just across the dirt road.

I have no idea what this flower is. It is actually an entire tree covered with these orchid like blooms.

Yes those are small homes being built in the distance.

Chris and Juan reported that these are to be rented out short term.  Our understanding is that eventually lots will be sold and homes will be built.  The idea is that all of this it not supposed to impact the Isla as it is.  One step at a time I guess.  I do believe that once the road is paved that things will change quite a bit.  A paved road will make the Isla so much more accessible, not to just RVers but to everyone.  Amaitlan as the project is known has huge plans.  If you click here and just look at the projected renderings you will soon get a concept of what is to come.  Will this come to pass in our lifetime, I certainly hope not.

920 hectares to be protected and kept green. We shall see.

I don't see an RV park in this rendering. Best come down here and enjoy it before it changes.

It looks like 90% of the paths have been completed. Still some plants waiting to be planted but it looks so wonderful.

So much wonderful flora and the butterflies are magnificent. I saw a deep turquoise blue butterfly but it refused to pose for me. Next time!

We are so lucky to have this garden right across from us.

Have you ever seen a tree with such armor? It did have some nice flowers very high up, perhaps a protection for those.

The first time I have ever seen peach bougainvillea.

Central Park in New York City consists of 300 hectares and the botanical garden here on the Isla is 850 hectares.

Many paths to wander in this park, so easy to meander here and there.

This photo does not due it justice but the bark on this tree is so very interesting with many layers and much depth.

We had a great visit and walk but sadly I came home with about 12 mosquito bites and Colin about three.  So be sure to spray yourself before entering the garden of Eden  🙁  We did still have our daily beach walk but later in the day.  The temperatures have picked up and it is warmish.  77F at 6:00PM is a pleasant temperature.

Only one cruise ship in yesterday!

Dad is doing as well as can be expected.  He is finally on the list for a nursing home, his last forever home.  Gas prices in Edmonton are low, very low, 69.6 per litre.  Amazing!

Que Pasa

The first que pasa of the year.  We have really just being laying low and doing the minimal.  We did have to clean inside the RV the other day, the dust was pretty thick.

This is mostly how we spend the evenings, nothing requiring too much energy.

Our Mazatlan RV tech dropped by on Sunday and fixed our hot water switch. The system was only working on propane but now we are back to being able to use either. We prefer to use electric while parked. Look at that reflection on the RV and that is before waxing. Hasn't been waxed since last year.

We are using a carry bag for Carmeh while on the beach. It is easier on Colin to carry her that way. We were going to order a dog stroller for her but were unable to find someone to bring it down for us. I should have thought about that weeks ago and it would have worked out. If anyone knows of someone coming down here who can bring me one please let me know. I need about 7 days to order it from Amazon.

We let her walk a bit and when she gets tired or we think she has walked enough....

...into the bag she goes. She loves being in the bag which makes things easier. Fortunately Caeli doesn't seem to mind walking although she loves being carried in her bag also, but she needs the exercise.

It was a double party last night. First we had a small happy hour for newly arrived friends now here for 2 months @ Marjorie's. They needed to escape the cold of the USA. Then we ended up joining the RV Park happy hour at Jose's. Always something to do here if you want to be busy.

We have had 2 days of grey skies and some coolish weather. Suddenly last night at sunset the sun peeked out.

Thank goodness my camera was in Colin's pocket.

The colours were magnificent.

It is a cool 79F as I write this at 3:30PM.  Nothing to complain about.  So glad I am not in Edmonton where it has been a bone chilling -48C with the wind chill nor back home in Kelowna where for the first time in 35 years they declared a snow day and closed the schools. Twelve inches of  snow is serious stuff.  Life remains great here on the Isla.  As a blog reader of many years and who is now happily parked here in Tres Amigos RV Park, said to me last night, ” I like it here and I want to come back, for sure !!”  I replied ” Sue,what took you so long?”   😮

They are gone and things are rather quiet around here.

January 2nd was a quiet day just watching all the beach activity. The red truck was doing wheelies up and down the beach and the driver was very very drunk. At one point he even drove into the water. The lifeguard who drives the red ATV on the left called the police and a crowd gathered. We have no idea what was said and if he was fined or just got away with a warning.

After Chris & Juan's siesta we headed over for a nice visit with Linda & Kevin. Back home to the RV to feed the girls and then the four of us headed down the road for a final dinner at Miguels.

Too soon, Saturday morning came and it was time for them to leave. Yes it was that cold that I was wearing pants and a sweater. 60F.

It is always sad to say goodbye but you have to in order to say hello again.

We spent most of yesterday relaxing, me reading and Colin playing his guitar.  Unfortunately we had computer issues.  The server does not like my iMac and kept shutting me out.  We did finally get that resolved with some input by Rae.  Had lots of drop in visitors Saturday afternoon so the day passed quickly.  I even did get to speak to my Dad which was a plus.

Some quality time just chilling.

Already the sun is setting so much closer to the mountain proving that the earth is rotating. Not that I doubted it, but it is always nice to measure it.

Nice moon rise.

We watched a movie while eating dinner but it wasn’t long before I fell asleep.  I guess all those Christmas movies I taped will just have to wait for another 11 months.

A wonderful start to 2015

January 1st got off to a roaring start with the annual RV Park Polar Bear swim. Well you can clearly see where the sun doesn't normally shine on Brent's body.

We watched but did not participate nor did we indulge in the vodka and orange juice served to warm everyone up following the swim.  Instead we did our normal morning beach walk.  We are still doing the half carry and half walk thing with Carmeh.  A reader who is a vet suggested that we try getting her to swim using a doggie vest as that would be good exercise but there is nowhere to get a vest like that here.  As long as we keep her from doing stairs we will be happy.  She has been off anti inflammatories since Christmas Day and she does not seem to be suffering.

The girls have found something in the sand.

A sand dollar. Our first gift of 2015. I later found a very tiny and fragile sand dollar. So very special.

We got back to the RV to find that our 3 tier hanging fruit/veggie basket had fallen. It had finally rusted out. So Colin, clever man that he is, devised a new hanging basket from a panel of our dog fencing 🙂

The first day of the year seemed to be the appropriate time to re plant my kale and swiss chard seedlings. Of course Santiago the plant man still has not shown up so I was out of soil. Clever girl that I am, I planted some extra seedling throughout my flower gardens.

Colin spent quality time with some of the guys.

The last sunset of 2014 on the Isla.

The first sunset of this new year was shaping up to be a beauty.

This beauty spent New Years Eve and Day in our wee cove.

Who are these sunsetting good looking folks?

Wow, I wonder what the rest of 2015 will bring!

A great end to the first day of the year. Buen provecho!

So ends 2014!!

December 31st started with our morning beach walk and the hours seemed to fly past.  Always something to see on the beach and there were so many people on the beach today.  The hotels are at 100% capacity plus there were two large cruise ships in port. Of course there are always friends dropping by to chat and a few things to do.  Suddenly it was time to get ready to head into the big city of Mazatlan.  We left here about 7:30PM and never returned till 2015.

First stop was the Sky Bar at the Freeman Hotel. We went right up to the pool area where we could see the lights of the city and hear the many different bands gearing up for midnight. My last margarita for 2014 and my first this winter.

From there the four of us headed up and down a few streets. Saw some interesting things along the way.

Soon we arrived at the Plazuela Machado. This is where the main party was going to be.

Last year Colin and I had reserved a table at Il Mosto and danced the night away to a not so great band.  It has become the norm that the restaurants arrange a set menu and you pay a lot of money to have dinner and pay extra for any drinks.  We still enjoyed last year as we were surrounded by friends.  But Chris and Juan were not sure what they wanted to do so we thought we would just go with the flow.  Sadly due to the amount of tourists in the city there was not a table or even a chair to be had. So we just kept wandering around until we came to Casa Garcia aka El Presidio, likely one of the top two restaurants in the city.  Yes you could order off the menu and no they were full but because of Juan and Chris and that special way they have around them, a table for four miraculously appeared.

It is a lovely restaurant that has grown by leaps and bounds and looked so very festive.

This was turning into an enchanted evening.

We each ordered a different item and they were all superb. Each bite as delicious as the first. The food is served hot and fresh, transported from the kitchen in these special carriers. Despite the hundreds of guests there was no delay in our meal and we were made to feel that we were the most important table in the restaurant.

As that magic hour approached hats and horns were passed out. Note to self...do not ever give Juan a horn to blow, he really really likes to use it!

We knew where we wanted to be at midnight and that was at the Plazuela Machado. So many people and yet we even knew some of them. The band was excellent. Lots of dancing was happening.

Juan greeted 2015 in his own unique style.

Then it was time to really get serious and party.

We had a fabulous time but by the time we were past the first 30 minutes of 2015 we decided to head back to the Isla. Even here they were having major parties.

Home sweet home to savor the peace of 2015 and have a nightcap.  Oh yes, another hot air lantern, a yellow one for obvious reasons ( yellow signifies happiness and friendship ), was sent adrift and then we all drifted off to sleep. There are many traditions involved here in Mexico in order to greet the New Year properly, click here for a fun write up.

Wishing you all my dear friends and readers the very best in 2015.  May all your wishes and dreams be fulfilled.
