Yesterday was a full day for us

We were heading into Mazatlan with Laura and Alan to show them our favorite shopping places.  This tug was pushing the freighter into place as we waited for the lancha.

Just across the shipping channel, right at the embarcadero, there is a fish market.  You can’t miss Colin with his bright socks.

Next stop was an ATM where Laura got a surprise.  Her four digit PIN number were letters.  Instead of remembering numbers she remembered a four digit name.  Apparently in Canada there are letters next to the numbers on an ATM machine.  I have no idea as I don’t use ATM at home, only when we travel and both here and Europe ( to date ) they only have numbers on the keypad.  What do they have in the US?  So we checked out a nearby phone booth and by looking at that keypad Laura was able to work out her numeric PIN.  Crisis averted.

Just as we were showing them the Panama bakery and restaurant near the mercado we bumped into friends.  Longtime readers will remember Hannelore and Peter ( blog readers for longer than I can remember ) whom we have met here in Mazatlan many times over the years.  They are here in Mazatlan for the month of February.  As soon as I saw them I remembered that.  Hannelore said that by reading the blog she was aware of how busy we were so she hadn’t made contact.  Not to worry we will for certain meet you.  Perhaps this time in the Golden Zone.  We have a friend playing in a band up there in the afternoons.  That might be fun.

Some construction right across from the mercado.

We walked around pointing out the best place to buy romaine, etc.  This booth is ready for Carnival which does not start until February 28th.

According to Colin this is the best booth to purchase those delicious mini apple bananas.

If you want to find Tony’s Burgers use the number three door.  We did have lunch here but it appears that we we all too busy eating to bother to take a photo.  Yes, it was that good.

It was time to head back to the Isla.  All these pelicans are waiting for a handout at the embarcadero.  The fisherman in the white boots would throw scraps from the fish he was cutting up.

Heading back to the peace and coolness of the Isla.  First trip to and from Mazatlan for Laura and Alan from this embarcadero.

After a wee rest we walked up the beach to El Velero where we met up with Scott.  The rock and roll band was playing full blast and our plan was to have just a drink and to leave at 5PM. That did not happen, a few of us had another drink and then dinner.  What the heck, why not?

A magical sunset as we walked back.

Scott left this morning, back to Canada to work but Laura and Alan have just over three weeks to relax and simply enjoy life on the Isla.  Adios Scott, it was very special to have met you.

February Calendar Girls

A typical walk on the beach with our girls.  We still walk most days and we often share a thought of an incident that once had happened as walked with the girls, a crab they chased into the ocean or dug up or just watching them run.  Of course in the latter years pushing them in a stroller when Carmeh in particular could not walk.  Memories are great things.  A perfect photo for our February calendar.

I was looking for something earlier tonight in my blog through my search area and found some long ago photos of the girls.  When I use that search tool I invariably get some photos of the girls over the years.  Always a shock at first to see their faces and then it becomes more of a visit with them.  Such great memories.

I have made my decision…

..about an e-reader 😉   After much thought and the reading of all your many many comments ( thank you again ) as well as surveying the RVers here at Tres Amigos RV Park, I made a decision.

When we were in Italy, France and Barcelona for four weeks last spring, Colin complained about having nothing to do while I was on the laptop writing the blog.  It certainly wasn’t fair of me to take over the computer for 3 – 5 hours per day.  So because all of your ideas and suggestions I came up with a solution.  Instead of carting 4 -5 books with me I would take an iPad with me.  Still less weight than the books.  We will travel with both our MacBook Air and and the new iPad.  So if I am on the laptop doing a blog post, then he will have the iPad to use for internet and emails.  If I choose to read a book on the iPad, Colin will have the use of the laptop, brilliant idea if I say so myself 💡  That way we both have access to the internet as needed and I do not need to take any books with me.  However I likely will continue to read a real book both at home and here in Mexico but then that may just change 😎

Our next trip starts on May 14th and we will be gone for 6 weeks, so time was of the essence.  The wonderful people bringing down the new RV skylight will also be bringing me an iPad.  I had to make a quick decision as to what I was going to do and the iPad seemed to be the perfect solution.  If I had unlimited funds, I would have purchased a Kindle as well as the iPad.

So this is what I ended up ordering.  I could have purchased a 5th generation for $40.00 less but this will keep us both online for a very long time whether reading or just browsing the internet.

So between my computer guru ( who just may be flying in for  a visit in a month ) and others here on the Isla, I will have this up and running in a few weeks.  Anticipated delivery by very special RVers, is February 15th.  That gives me time to figure out how to use this as an e-reader before we head north.  Now I just have to figure out the best place to find books online and how to download them, etc.

I really could not have made this decision without you, my loyal blog readers.  You truly are the best.  Your comments and especially your advice are always welcome.

It appears that we missed a very special visit yesterday.  I am not certain, but I don’t believe that they are my blog readers but they are of George, who writes Our Awesome Travels.  When he found out they were coming to Mazatlan, George suggested that they come say hello to us.  Yesterday was that day but we had just left on a 3.4 mile walk when they arrived, so we missed them.  Johanna and Rolf Heimlicher from Alberta wanted to show George that they had made an attempt to meet us.

They took a few photos.

George, please send them this blog post.  We are happy to meet up with them in Mazatlan if they so chose.  Sorry we missed meeting up with you, Johanna and Rolf.  Perhaps another year.  Thanks for making the effort.

Today passed in a blur, another long 3.4 mile walk, a tour of the Isla with Laura and Alan, an RV repair project for Colin.  As for me, I only got snippets of things started.  I am beginning to plan our spring vacation and I have to say it is all Greek to me.  Yes, that is a clue.

Que pasa

I was going to title this post ‘Spaghetti Dinner’ or maybe the ‘Brechin Clan’ but I think ‘Que Pasa’ covers all that and more.

We had a new visitor to the oranges yesterday morning and again today.  A male Gila Woodpecker, lovely to see.

Eric came by yesterday to do some work for other RVers and stopped to show us his find.

He did take the generator apart after we left Saturday.  Because yesterday was a holiday he had not yet checked in with a radiator shop to find a new core.  Meanwhile he brought us the fan belt to show us how close we came to disaster.  Eric believes that we may have had a few hours left of generator use before the fan belt broke.  At that point the generator would have seized and then we would have had no choice but to purchase a new unit at just over $10,000.00USD.   How very fortunate we are that this all happened here in Mazatlan.

Last evening there was a happy hour and spaghetti diner at Camelita’s restaurant here on the Isla.  The meal is only 120 pesos/$6.30USD/$8.27CAD per person and includes the pasta dish with homemade sauce, a very fresh salad and bread and butter.  The meal is prepared by an ex RVer who now rents a home here on the Isla.  Carmelita’s offers the venue and discounted drinks.  A lovely monthly event open to all on the Isla.

Always difficult to get a good shot of moving people in the dark.  The band are from the Isla and they are very talented.  They certainly had most of the audience up and dancing.

So Alan and Laura can really dance. Who knew?

We really had a great evening.

I even got to enjoy a dance with Scott who is a wonderful dancer.  Scott is a son of our friend John who we lost to cancer years back.  John and Alan were brothers, so now you might see the connection of all these special folks in our lives, the Brechin clan.  We RVed with John and his wife Pat many many years ago at Mr. Moro’s in Playa Los Glorious.

Today we heard of the passing of George of the blog Tioga and George.  He was a champion for Mexico and for RVers traveling here.  George began blogging in May of 2003 and his words are still on his blog to read & enjoy his many adventures as well as to inspire many to travel.  His unexpected loss reminds me and hopefully you my readers, that life is so very very precious and it is up to each of us to choose to live each and every day to the fullest as George did.  You will be missed by many.  One of my fondest memories is a special dance I had with George at the Plazuela Machado a few years back.

Laura, Alan, Colin and I walked back from the spaghetti diner along the beach with the aid of flashlights.  But we didn’t want the enjoyable evening to end so we sat by our fire pit and chatted until almost midnight.  We were so involved with our conversation that taking a photo was never a thought but again a new memory was made.

This morning two more of the Brechin clan showed up.   Kayla and her boyfriend Paul are visiting Mazatlan for a few days.  Kayla was lucky enough to win tickets for two to Mazatlan.  I know that we will be seeing more of them in the years to come as they have already fallen in love with Mazatlan.  Hopefully Laura and Alan are going to get some free time to just sit and relax and to walk the beach.

Once again the end to yet another perfect day here on the Isla.  I would much rather be here for the winter than pass through on a cruise ship for a day.

A very fun Sunday on the Isla

Looking down the beach we saw some unusual activity and decided to check it out.  Of course we let our good friends Laura & Alan in on the action.

Turns out it was a car club based in Mazatlan and they were filming a video.

This is the stick shift for the car shown above.

Those girls kept dancing on the spot and smiling for several hours.  The fellow on the right is holding a large camera.

The paint job wrapped around the sides of the truck as well.

This group of six vehicles had come in at sunset the night prior.  I don’t know if this is where they spent the night.

This fellow made himself very comfortable in the sand.

The dancing and filming continued but we headed to the embarcadero end of the beach for a wee walk.  The day started out overcast and cool but turned into a lovely afternoon.

Some beach activity I caught on our way back to the RV.

The Mexican equivalent of food trucks.

So many activities to chose from here on the Isla.

The car club were positioning themselves on the beach at low tide.

They ever so slowly drove along the beach as a drone captured the movement.  Likely the video will be sped up to make for an interesting movie.

So ends yet another interesting day here on the Isla.
