Carnaval and the Plazuela Machado on Friday

The official start to Carnaval was Thursday but last Friday was the day we chose to introduce our friends to the event.

Which one should I buy?

No doubt about it, this is who I am 🙂

A very unique vendor selling hats for dogs.  They also had boots and ties and leashes. I also saw some dog coats and dog tags.

Interesting tablecloth for a table selling candy.

We stopped for a drink in the midst of our wandering about checking the que pasa of it all.

The main problem with this monarch butterfly is that the stairs have no hand rails.

One by one the Banda bands started to appear.  Later in the evening we could count 15 plus groups.  Really easy to count all those huge tubas.  The only thing is, they all were playing at the same time, but different songs!

Laura went shopping and I went with her.  On our return we saw our guys in serious conversation.

Fun times.

Dinner is served.

We all ordered the sword fish fillet.

It wasn’t long before the Plazuela was packed.  The music never stopped.

Laura wanted to get up close. She had stuffed her ears with Kleenex.

This is what she and the rest of us were hearing.

How many seconds were you able to listen before you stopped?  Despite the many many bands playing the worst was right next to us.  There were two bands face to face with only 6 feet between them dueling it out.  Noise plus!!

We later walked up to the malecon to check out the action. What I found most interesting was that the four of us were the only white people there.  Come to think of it, after 8PM, we were the only white folks at the Machado.

The malecon was where the important Banda bands were.  The ones who were being paid to be there.

Quite the crowd and everyone was having a wonderful time.

Moving on and some sad news

We were surprised to see Erik working on the RV when we returned from our Friday morning walk.  We have an appointment with him for next Tuesday.  However Colin had mentioned that he should check out the dash AC in case some major work was required.

Problem solved.  It was the relay switch that controlled the dash AC that had corroded.  All this salt air does do a lot of damage.

Meanwhile Gustavo was bolting in the final covers on the generator unit.  They both later attached the generator exhaust pipe.  We are good to drive away.  Except for a full day of RV repairs next Tuesday.

Friday was a perfect evening. A warm breeze and no bugs.

Our happy hour with Alan and Laura went until the propane tank ran out.  We enjoyed a lot of fires this winter.  We still have propane in the BBQ tank if we really want another fire.

Once they left we started to put our dinner together. Fresh snapper covered with the lime mayonnaise that you can get here sprinkled with chipotle powder.  The potatoes were already off the grill and the zucchini was close to being ready.  It was a great meal along with out usual Caesar salad.  Even better we had snapper leftover for fish tacos the next day.

Friday morning brought us our first stuck motorcycle.  Do you think walking around it and not looking at it will help?

Truly stuck.  Colin ended up giving them a piece of thin two foot square board that they could put under the back tire and bit by bit they got themselves free from the sand.

Friday night was a very fun Carnaval event and that will be my next post.

Sadly to bring you up to date in real time, we had a tragedy here on the Isla.  This happened yesterday, Saturday about 12:10PM.  We actually saw all the people gathering at the waters edge, the police truck and the lifeguard.  I had no idea what was going on, didn’t bother to take any photos and only later found out what had happened.  A visitor from Monterrey had a tragic accident right on the beach in front of RV1.  He later died on the operating table.  It just so happened that Jose the RV park manager was at the hospital when this fellow came in.  The entire hospital stopped what they were doing and focused all their energy on helping this fellow.  Sadly he did not make it.  You can read the newspaper article here.  Jose said that is was very grim at the hospital.  I could go into more details but suffice to say that many are reaching out to prevent this from happening again and on my part to be sure that there is medication right here on the Isla to deaden the pain that this poor fellow had to endure until he got across the shipping channel to the paramedics.

Such a sad thing to happen here on the Isla during Carnaval.

Last Sunday was a very long day

First thing in the morning last Sunday, we had a stuck vehicle.  Lucky guy.  This tractor was pulling the wagon seen on the left.  He unhooked and came over to pull the truck out.

We only found out five days earlier that there was a classical guitar concert being held at the Museo de Arte de Mazatlan at noon last Sunday.

Sometimes that is how things are done in Mexico.  The artist who is one of the main performers of the Culiacan Internationl Guitar Festival flew into Mazatlan a few days early and the organizers decided to have a concert here in Mazatlan.  Certainly not much time to advertise.

First time I have ever seen a plastic recycle bin in Mazatlan.  This one was in the inner courtyard and there was another outside of the museum.

Iliana Matos is from Cuba but now resides in Canada.  The concert was not as well attended as it could have been mostly because the music lovers were at the final Gordon Campbell concert of the season also starting at noon.

One of the Carnaval statues on the Malecon.

We met Juan and Chris afterwards and walked along the malecon to El Fish Market for lunch which ended up being dinner.

Somehow my eyeglasses never made it back into my purse as we were driving to the embarcadero earlier so I had to wear my sunglasses inside during the concert and all afternoon.

The margarita was great and I had one of the best meals of the season.  The tuna was seared perfectly.

Passed by the Navy all decked out in their finest as we headed back to the Isla.

How else are you going to get your plants back home to the Isla?  Note the ceiling photo of the Virgin de Guadalupe.

Happy hour started with just the four of us and then evolved.  Here Colin is opening a bottle of champagne to celebrate Juan’s birthday.

The circle got bigger.  I brought out a few munchies, the wine, tequila, vodka and beer just kept flowing.

A beautiful sunset.

No one was leaving the party.  There certainly was a good deal of conversation happening.

A few diehards left at the end.

It appears that certain folks needed a coffee fix the next morning 🙂  The boys headed off to the airport Monday morning and I headed inside for my relaxing massage which I really needed after all that generator stuff.  What a busy weekend we had, each day so very full.

The rest of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday passed in a blur.  I was so tired that I cancelled attending a book discussion by the author of the Belmar Hotel book.  The good news is that I have completed my research on eleven stops and I only have three more cities to go.  The weather was cool in February so it was a good time to stay inside and hang out on my computer.

Last Tuesday’s sunset.

Please don’t miss my March 1st post about Cloii.  I posted that early this morning so this is my second post today 😉

Carnaval is upon us and oh how much fun we are having.  You guessed it, those posts will be a bit delayed as well 🙄

March calendar girl

Cloii was our first dachshund.   We had been married for ten years when we decided, well actually Colin wanted to, get a dog.  He had had doxies as a child.  One day way back then we had been out for a longish walk in Tsawwassen, BC when we walked through a park where a group were having their annual dachshund picnic.  Hundreds of doxies and their owners and none of them were barking.  All sizes, all colors and a mix of short haired, long haired and wire haired.  Then we saw the puppies for sale.  I was hooked.  The rest is history as they say.

Because of Cloii and her soon to be sister we purchased our first RV.  It was our first time camping together.  We stopped traveling the world by plane as we wanted to stay with our girls and RVing within North America was the only way to do it.  Cloii managed to travel as far as Playa las Glorias, Guasave, Sinaloa.  Sadly she met a very tragic end to her life at only five years of age.

The next three photos were taken from the internet.  A beautiful beach.

Playa las Glorias had the most wonderful sunsets.

Thanks to our girls we are still living this wonderful life of travel.

The return to the Isla and the rest of the day

Once we left the generator shop we both let out a sigh of relief.  We had a working generator, more or less.

We saw this fellow selling these great pots roadside and I really wanted to stop but we were both drained and had no energy to make proper decisions so we carried on.

Approaching the Isla and our turn to the left.

What we could not deal with in the early morning Saturday.

But someone had done work while we were away.  Actually Laura & Alan as well as Chris and Juan had walked down after lunch to check that we would be able to get back.  Alan emailed us a photo.  The expression  ” a photo is worth a thousand words ” is so very true.  It was a great relief to us and we knew that we would be able to get back to the RV Park.  A huge change from what we had to deal with leaving the Isla earlier in the day.  This is my photo as we arrived at the crucial turn.

The foursome, Juan, Chris, Laura and Alan were waiting for us, to help guide us back home.  It did help that we had tracks to follow.  We have only one inch variance to get back into place because of the palapa and the distance to our neighbors.  Always a tricky parking job.

The sunset last Saturday, complete with my new dust spots. Not my fault but a result of trying to remove them.

RV 1 was hosting a weenie roast for us as well as RV2.  Doesn’t Tris look comfy not to mention happy?

Chris and Juan, really??  That is me in the green jacket on the right.  It was getting rather cool as the sun set.

A great fire.  That is our friend Alan in the plaid shirt.

Quite the crowd.

Everyone really had a great time.

A very hot fire.  By this point we had relaxed enough from the generator day to just enjoy the ambiance.  That is me on in the left bending down to cook our veggie dogs.  By the way, it took two days to de smoke our clothes post weenie roast.

Thank you Darwin and Audrey for organizing this lovely evening.

Most folks left early but some of us stayed and a few campfire songs were sung.  A great way to end the ‘return of the generator’.
