Nursing….

… a sick puppy!!!  We were up most of early Friday morning cleaning up vomit or diarrhea.  We will never know the cause but suspect that Caeli got sick from the last crab she killed which was Wednesday morning.  No crabbing on Thursday so unless she picked up some beach garbage we did not see…. but as I say who knows.

We are so use to dealing with Carmeh being ill this way but never Caeli.  She woke me at 2AM a tiny pitiful quiet bark.  I took her out, poor thing, she was suffering!  At 4AM I had Colin take over as I could no longer carry her down the steps safely!

As the morning progressed we realized how ill she was by the very fact that she would not roll over onto her back for a belly rub nor give out her long tongue kisses.  I will never defer another again.

It was a trick feeding Carmeh and not letting Caeli see that.

Carmeh self feeding from the back of the sofa where Caeli can't reach.

Later Carmeh went off to the beach and started digging, somehow Caeli knew there was a crab there, from way up here on the beach.  We let Carmeh dig while the little one watched but neither was allowed to touch the crab or go into the water after it.  Sad for them.  Caeli slept 99% of the day.  I know she is hungry  ( we had her on a 24 hour fast ) but just as I was going to feed her some plain white rice she vomited again…….

She preferred to sleep outside in her bed so we kept her covered. Tough to get her to drink water.

Carmeh kept checking on her sister, sniffing her and whatnot!  Even brought her a frisbee at one point!

After much discussion and consultation with Dr. Google we decided there was no point rushing off to a vet.  So Colin and I stayed home and cleaned.  We certainly were not in a position to dash off to Art Walk in Mazatlan Centro nor attend the Russian Ballet performance of Romeo & Juliette at the Angela Peralta Theater.  Can you believe being able to attend such a performance for between 200 and 500 pesos (16.00 to 38.00 USD)??  Mazatlan’s cultural community is phenomenal.

So we stayed home Friday night, nursing our puppy, who will be 7 on April 1st, which by the way, is the day we have decided to start our Northern trek 🙁

The above was written late last night and things have changed for the worse this morning.  Caeli slept all night but vomited pink froth when she did get up.  She did eat a very small amount of rice and boiled chicken but an hour later she eliminated  a bloody mess.  Colin has just left to take her to the vet  in Mazatlan.

Stay tuned……

Three hours later Colin and Caeli are back.  Can’t say enough good things about this Mexican vet.  He is the same one who treated Carmeh in December.  Basically he says things are just passing thru her system and also suggested an antibiotic for 5 days.  He did a very thorough check with his hands of each organ and determined that she is fine internally.  Told us to keep up the same small food feedings and lots of rest and TLC.  He didn’t seem to be concerned about the crab she had eaten.

The antibiotic is called NINEKA and this is what it is, something I should add to my dog medicine box.

Principio Activo : NEOMICINA + CAOLIN + PECTINA
Grupo Terapeutico : ANTIDIARREICO Y ANTISÉPTICO INTESTINAL
Lider : KAOMYCIN
The vet check, the medication and getting her anal glands expressed cost 200 pesos ( about $15.60 USD ).

I hope she gets better soon! She is just a bit younger than Chloe-she turned 7 in December. The two dogs sure missed each other while we were gone. We got Merlin home first and he roamed the house trying to find Chloe. When the kids brought Chloe, those dogs went nuts!
