Happy Hour is Here !!

Happy hour is back in the province of B.C.  We were the only province in all of Canada that did not allow licensed bars and restaurants to change their prices during the course of a day, hence no happy hour.  Today a new liquor law took effect and for the first time ever, happy hours will be allowed in B.C.

This a perfect time to make the announcement with tourism in full swing here in B.C. I’m certain that this will make a huge difference to the coffers of many pubs, bars and restaurants.  Who knows I may venture out once or twice to check out a few places in town.  Knowing me, I’m likely to just stay here at home and enjoy my….

Happy Friday and Happy Hour everyone  😎

I agree, buy you have to admit George, that it’s nice for folks in BC to finally get a 2 for 1 deal like the rest of Canada.

But will the restaurants double their prices before giving “Two for One”?

    • contessa says:

I like to think not, Croft but I guess it remains to be seen. Isn’t it better to start attracting a crowd and then perhaps raise the prices at tad. Likely the 2 for 1 ‘s might be smaller servings.

I hope you are right. We have not been “out” in Canada for a long time, mostly because of the cost. A small break for the consumer would be nice.

Croft, as you, we have not been out either, but I can handle the 2 for 1 vino blanco. We’ll give someone some business, maybe on a patio overlooking the lake.

Would love it if our local pubs gave us a special Happy Hour price.. Other wise we’ll do cheese/crackers with vino on our patio too… Cheers!

    Hi Contessa:

Not 100% sure, but here in Ontario I don’t think happy hour (or 2 for 1 drink specials) are allowed. BC must be more progressive!

Hello Al, nice to hear from you again. Actually Ontario does have happy hour only you can’t call it that. In an article in Toronto Life date June 21/14 there is a story explaining this very topic. This is the link to the article http://www.torontolife.com/daily-dish/drinks-dish/2012/12/05/toronto-happy-hour/ and here is the first paragraph.

Happy hours have a weird history in straight-laced Ontario. The province first allowed the practice in 1981, only to ban it three years later fearing it promoted drinking and driving. Then, in 2007, the Liquor Licence Act changed yet again, allowing booze prices to fluctuate with the time of day or the day of the week. But don’t call these specials happy hours: that term, along with the phrase “cheap drinks,” is strictly prohibited. Toronto’s bar and restaurant owners are a savvy bunch, however, offering everything from cinq-à-septs (a Montreal import) to Crappy Hour. Below, 26 of the best Toronto happy hour specials (just don’t call it that).
