It breaks my heart to share this with you….

Colin and I made the most difficult decision we have ever had to make.  Yesterday, about midday, on our patio, we had the girls put to rest.  Carmeh’s pancreatitis was returning and she was so very very thin and becoming weaker by the day.  Caeli had some sort of internal bowel issue and they both have been suffering from a skin infection ( possibly staphylococcus epidermis which was getting worse each day despite special shampoo treatments and antibiotics). With our long trip back home ahead of us is seemed that this was the right time.

Carmeh and Caeli loved each other and were always together.

Our last sunset together.

Caeli and I. She would have been 12 years old on April 1st.

Carmeh and I on her last morning. She would have been 14 on August 7th.

Of course the sunset that evening was most special.

Then a few minutes later just to the east these lovely pastel colors.

While to the west the sky was on fire.

We loved our girls so very very much and they will live in our hearts forever.

    Dear Contessa & Colin,

Taylor and i are so sorry for your loss. Our hearts go out to the both of you. Thank you for posting the beautiful pictures of Carmeh & Caeli. Looking at them brought back great memories of both of you walking the ‘girls’ past our RV site. That daily ritual helped us get to know one another better. Please take good care of yourselves and safe travels home.

    Blessings
    Karen & Taylor

  9. Mary Edhaim says:

Thank you for sharing Carmeh and Caeli with us. I always looked forward to seeing their pictures. It brought a smile to my face, and usually a chuckle, because they were such little posers. A little “doxie” can sure take up alot of your heart, just like my little Ellie. I hope that all of your wonderful memories of them can overcome your sadness in the coming months. Sending prayers of healing to Colin’s mom.

  12. Sue says:

Dear contessa and Colin, I was texting pat yesterday and she told me of the tragedy of your two girls. She didn’t go into detail but she did say you had to put them down. I am sooooo sorry. You and Colin must me devastated. They were your children. Please accept our condolences. I know it will be hard and you will miss them very much. Take care and we will be thinking of you.

Oh, my, Contessa. I am at such a loss for words. I can’t imagine what you must be feeling right now. I just simply cannot imagine. I am crying as I write this, but of course call me any time you are ready to talk.

I can understand why you did what you had to do. Life for Caeli would have not been good without her sister. And the bacterial infection didn’t sound good. Such a peaceful ending to a fulfilling life of loving care. I often wish my own life could come to an end so easily and painlessly. It is for those left behind that we grieve, as you deal with the pain.

My heart aches for you and Colin both. I am sending you love and comfort. I am glad you have each other as you navigate this most difficult time. Please do keep me posted on his Mom when you feel up to writing. I am here for you any time.

Sending you loads and loads of hugs!!!!!

I KNOW IT IS SO TOUGH AND MY HEART ACHES FOR BOTH OF YOU. FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH, I THINK YOU MADE THE RIGHT DECISION AS YOU HAVE BEEN SAYING, ON AND OFF, FOR ABOUT A YEAR, THAT YOU WERE CONSIDERING LETTING THE GIRLS GO. DON’T SECOND GUESS YOURSELVES. I KNOW HOW QUIET AND EMPTY THE RV IS. TRUST ME. THAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF LOSING PETS OR A PERSON BUT YOU HAVE EACH OTHER AND BE GRATEFUL FOR THAT. IT TAKES TIMES TOO. SOMETIMES WHEN I ACCIDENTALLY PUT MY BLACK CARRY ON BAG ON THE FLOOR, I CATCH THE BLACK OUT THE CORNER OF MY EYE AND THINK IT’S ZULIN AND IT’S BEEN 5 YEARS. YOU’LL MISS YOUR DAILY ROUTINE WITH THEM BUT YOU SHOULD STILL GO FOR YOUR MORNING WALKS ON THE BEACH. EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT FOR YOU AND YOU’LL EACH GRIEVE IN YOUR OWN WAY AND ON YOUR OWN TIME TABLE.

WISH I COULD DO SOMETHING FOR YOU, BUT I CAN’T OTHER THAN TO PRAY YOU BOTH HAVE THE STRENGTH TO GET THROUGH THIS AND SEND YOU TONS OF HUGS.

THANK YOU FOR WRITING. I WAS A BASKET CASE YESTERDAY KNOWING WHAT YOU WERE GOING THROUGH.

LOVE AND ALL THE HUGS YOU NEED.

  17. Dan & Dianne says:

Hello to you both we are so sorry for your loss the girls were a very special part of your life and will be missed dearly we know the pain your going through it’s so hard when the time comes for a decision like this to be made it’s just heart wrenching but you both know it’s the right one. The one thing we both know is you loved your girls dearly they had a wonderful life with you and Colin but you certainly didn’t want them to suffer needlessly that’s why the decision had to be made heartbreaking though it was. We know your both hurting and your heart’s are very heavy we all know we want to keep our pets with us forever we love them so much, because of that love sadly you have to put your wants out of the way and make one of the toughest decisions in our life’s as we do what’s best for our/your girls who are suffering not what’s best for us it’s so tough to make. We are so sorry for your loss you know we feel your pain our thoughts are with you both just take one day at a time have a safe trip home, take care and hugs to you both. Dan and Dianne

  18. Margot says:

    Dear Contessa and Colin:

I can’t tell you how much we agonize over your news of Carmeh and Caeli’s passing. Your words made me cry and we know what you are going through. I have always believed that if you are going to have pets, you will be bereft and saddened one day. They don’t live as long as we do. We are so sorry this has come to pass and your babies have died. What a life they had! So many memories. Please know that they both had wonderful lives with you two.

Please try to be consoled with the knowledge you were wonderful parents and your darlings loved you. May they rest in peace.

    Much love, Margot and Ken

  33. Chris says:

I just got into my mailbox after arriving home at midnight from Bogota. I was shocked by the news and quite saddened. When I read the news Juan grabbed my hand and we both looked down at our little old fur friend and there was complete silence.

It’s a time and a decision that will come to all of us, and we have all had to do it before. The time leading up to this is stressful, painful, for both us and the kids. They become exhausted and worn out after all the attention that isn’t pleasant for anyone; feeding, medications, cleaning and the list goes on. Pretty much like us humans.

I wish I were there to hold you both, tell you how much you were loved by both the girls and all you gave them. You’re wonderful parents, caretakers, and most of all human beings. Few people around us can see that connection with nature. I know you see it daily on the Isla. Flora and fauna are seen as tools for many people when in reality we are all part of the bigger picture.

I won’t go on, you’re in our thoughts and prayers and we know that the last year has been difficult. But just imagine, all three girls are together now rolling around and watching each other. They’re waiting on the other side, happy, complete and thankful. They miss us and we’ll see them soon. Gotta go, tears are in my eyes.

    Love you both. Blessings.

    Colin & Contessa,

Our thoughts are with you as you mourn the loss of your beloved Caeli and Carmeh. They won the doggie lottery when they got you for their people.

  38. Hugh says:

So very sorry to hear about Caeli and Carmeh and can only imagine how difficult it must be for you. I think of them and you whenever I recall our adventures back in the winter of 2014.
I suppose you heard about Winnie? You will if you check her blog.

    Safe trip home!

    Warm hugs,

Carmeh and Caeli “They will rest in peace”

It was a tough decision for you and Colin, and will for sometime be watching underfoot not to step on them.

You both gave Carmeh and Caeli the love and care that we do for our pets, and then some.

The void will slowly, slowly fade but the memory will always be in your hearts.

Safe journey home, walk on the beach in their memory.

    Ruthe

  40. Karen & Lyle says:

We are so very sorry to hear this news. Losing a pet is hard enough but
both at once must be devastating for you both. Only people who have lost
dearly loved and cared for pets can know the pain.
We only arrived in our house in Calgary from Mexico. We had to fly home as
we hit a deer with the truck on our way back last week and had to leave it
in Mexico for repairs. I will email you more tomorrow.

    Oh my!!!!

    Sweet Contessa,
I cannot believe what you and Colin have been thru just in the last couple of days- God bless you both! bless you for being the best of the best fur baby parents ever ever! I know this was totally heartbreaking and devastating for you both! I am so very proud of you for loving those babies beyond, and for loving them enough know it was time to let them go ! 45. Renee & Greg says:

    Hi Contessa & Colin:

I read this and both Greg and I gasped. This is sad news indeed. It is
also, the bravest, wisest, and most selfless thing. To not let them both go
at the same time, would have ensured misery and heartache for the one left
behind. I am so very sorry dear friends that you had to experience this. I
know that your love for each other will see you through.

Rest assured that Greg and I are keeping you both in our prayers. Have safe
travels friends, see you next fall.

  46. Ena says:

Contessa, I saw your post about your dogs and felt so sad for you. We said a final farewell to our most beloved cat in January and still feel the loss, so I can only imagine what you are going through. I know they were a huge part of your lives and that everything about them will be missed. I wish I could make things better. Please know that I’m thinking of you and sending a big hug to comfort you in your loss.

I’ve been away the past 2 weeks and also having both computer & phone problems. Am not sure if the problem lies with my internet provider or cell phone, but it’s annoying all the same and quite often I unplug everything just to not be bothered.

Welcome back to spring at home, and Easter greetings to you both!
    Ena xo
